Do you have a question about the Emerson NetSure-48 VDC Power System and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The NetSure™ -48 VDC Power System, Model 7100, is a robust and versatile power solution designed for network telecommunication facilities such as central offices, vaults, huts, or other environmentally controlled electronic equipment enclosures. This system is suitable for installation as part of a Common Bonding Network (CBN) and is intended for use in restricted access locations on or above non-combustible surfaces.

Function Description

The NetSure™ -48 VDC Power System provides reliable DC power, typically operating from a nominal 208 VAC / 240 VAC single-phase input. It is designed to support various loads and can be configured with rectifiers and converters to meet specific power requirements. The system includes provisions for battery backup, ensuring continuous operation during AC power outages. A key feature is its ability to manage and monitor multiple components, including rectifiers, converters, and batteries, through an NCU (Network Control Unit) controller. The system also offers extensive alarm, reference, monitoring, and control connections for comprehensive site management.

Important Technical Specifications

The system is available in two specification numbers: 582127000100 and 582127000103.

  • Input Voltage: Nominal 208 VAC / 240 VAC, single phase, 50 Hz / 60 Hz.
  • Rectifier Input Feeds: Provides one AC feed per two rectifiers.
  • Output Voltage: -48 VDC.
  • Current Capacity: Input current for 208 VAC is 20 A, and for 240 VAC is 17.5 A, with a maximum overcurrent protection device of 30 A.
  • Wire Size Capacity: AC input wiring typically uses 10 AWG copper wire (THHN 90°C) with a 3/4" conduit size. Load connections support 26-14 AWG for GMT distribution fuse blocks (max 35A per block) and 6-14 AWG for rectifier AC input feeds.
  • Battery Support: The system supports lead-acid batteries and includes battery trays, battery disconnect circuit breakers, and temperature probes for battery management. It can monitor up to two 48V battery strings with four 12V blocks per string or up to eight battery strings for midpoint monitoring.
  • Controller: Features an NCU Controller (UM1M830BNA) for system management.
  • Interface Boards: Includes a System Interface Board (562662), an IB2-1 Interface Board (MA4C5U31), and an optional EIB-1 Extended Interface Board (MA455U41) and IB4 (2nd Ethernet Port Board) (558076).
  • Communication: NCU CAN Port (RJ-45) for connecting external devices, and Ethernet ports on the NCU front panel and IB4 board for local and network access. Default IP address for IB4 is 192.168.1.2.
  • Torque Specifications:
    • Relay rack battery tray screws: 70 in-lbs.
    • Rear angle bracket bolts: 84 in-lbs.
    • Cabling bracket screws: 70 in-lbs.
    • Lug adapter busbar bolts: 72 in-lbs (1/4"), 300 in-lbs (3/8").
    • GMT distribution fuse block jumper: 75 in-lbs.
    • AC input connections: 18 in-lbs.
    • Frame ground connections: 23 in-lbs.
    • IB2/EIB terminal block connections: 2.2 in-lbs.
    • Battery connections to distribution cabinet busbars: 300 in-lbs (3/8" standard flat and lock washer), 180 in-lbs (3/8" Belleville lock washer).
    • Rectifier bus landing point kit: 300 in-lbs.

Usage Features

  • Hot-Swappable Modules: Rectifier and converter modules can be inserted or removed with power applied, allowing for seamless maintenance and upgrades.
  • Configurable Distribution: Supports various distribution panels, including single voltage (-48 VDC) and dual voltage (-48 VDC / +24 VDC) configurations, with provisions for bullet nose type fuseholders, TPS/TLS fuses, and circuit breakers. An optional 6-position GMT Distribution Fuse Block is also available.
  • Battery Management: The system offers battery block monitoring (12V blocks) or midpoint battery voltage monitoring for up to eight battery strings. It supports battery charge temperature compensation and Battery Thermal Runaway Management (BTRM) to extend battery life and prevent thermal runaway.
  • Digital Inputs/Outputs: The IB2 and optional EIB boards provide programmable relay outputs and digital inputs for external alarms, reference, monitoring, and control. The IB2 has eight programmable alarm relays and eight digital inputs, while the EIB offers five programmable alarm relays and eight DC voltage inputs.
  • ESTOP Functionality: Digital Input #8 on the IB2 is factory-wired for an ESTOP function, which can shut down rectifiers, open the battery disconnect contactor, and shut down converters in an emergency.
  • NCU Controller: The NCU provides a local display with a main menu for viewing active alarms, system settings, input power, module information, DC equipment status, and battery-related data. It also offers a "Start Wizard" for initial setup and configuration.
  • Remote Access: The NCU controller can be accessed locally via its front panel Ethernet port or remotely through a customer's LAN via the IB4 board's Ethernet port.

Maintenance Features

  • Installation Acceptance Checklist: A checklist is provided to ensure proper installation and initial operation, with some procedures potentially factory-performed.
  • Documentation Package: A comprehensive customer documentation package is provided, including installation instructions, user manuals for the power system and NCU controller, rectifier and converter instructions, a system application guide, engineering drawings, and controller configuration files.
  • Alarm Indicators: The NCU features status (green), minor alarm (yellow), and critical or major alarm (red) indicators. Rectifier and converter modules also have power (green), protection (yellow), and alarm (red) indicators for quick status checks.
  • Alarm Relay Test: The NCU includes an alarm relay test feature to verify the operation of external alarm relays.
