Overview

The X-STREAM X2 Series Gas Analyzers are sophisticated instruments designed for industrial process gas analysis. They offer a compact design with easily accessible internal components and are highly customizable for a wide range of applications, with internal construction remaining largely identical across different housing types. The analyzers feature a multilingual microprocessor-controlled user interface with either a liquid crystal display (LCD) or a vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) for clear indication of measurement values, status messages, and parameter input. For enhanced legibility in brighter environments, wall-mounted units can be fitted with a VFD and an impact-tested glass panel. All analyzer types include three front panel LEDs that display status information in accordance with NAMUR NE 44 specifications, indicating "Failure," "Function check," "Out of specification," and "Maintenance request." The analyzer software is operated using only six keys.

Function Description

The X-STREAM X2 gas analyzers can measure up to four different gas components using various analyzing techniques, including:

  • IR (Non-Dispersive Infrared Analysis): Utilizes gas-specific light absorption to discriminate between different gases. The IntrinzX technology, an enhancement of the "proof peak" technology, provides four reference measurements per chopper wheel revolution, offering high dynamic measurement ranges (e.g., 0-200 to 50,000 ppm CO), reduced temperature dependency, and high sensitivity for low measuring ranges. This technology allows for easier field repair, extended span calibration intervals, and minimized demand for test gases.
  • UV (Ultraviolet Analysis): Similar to IR, but uses UV light sources for gas-specific absorption.
  • pO2 (Paramagnetic Oxygen Analysis): Measures oxygen concentrations based on the paramagnetic characteristics of oxygen molecules. It uses nitrogen-filled quartz spheres arranged in a dumbbell configuration, hinged to a platinum wire, and placed inside a cell within an inhomogeneous magnetic field. The resulting torque from oxygen molecules deflecting into the highest field strength area is compensated by a current, which directly measures oxygen concentration. Variations include corrosion-resistant, solvent-resistant, and intrinsically safe versions for flammable gases.
  • eO2 (Electrochemical Oxygen Analysis): Utilizes the principle of galvanic cells with a lead anode and a gold cathode surrounded by an acid electrolyte. Oxygen diffusing through a fluororesin membrane is electrochemically reduced on the gold electrode, generating a current proportional to the oxygen concentration. This sensor provides an absolute zero.
  • tO2 (Electrochemical Trace Oxygen Analysis): Another electrochemical sensor technology for trace oxygen measurements. It is a self-contained, disposable unit that requires no maintenance and generates a signal proportional to oxygen concentration.
  • TC (Thermal Conductivity Analysis): Measures thermal conductivity, primarily used for hydrogen (H2) and helium (He). A Wheatstone bridge with temperature-sensitive resistors detects heat absorption by the sample gas, generating a signal proportional to thermal conductivity. The block containing the gas paths is thermostatted and isolated to suppress ambient temperature influences.
  • tH2O (Trace Moisture Measurement): A robust 2-wire transmitter using dew point impedance measurement for continuous moisture measurements in gases and gas mixtures. The sensor is factory calibrated and does not require recalibration.

    • X2FD (Cast Aluminum Flameproof Housing): IP66 / NEMA 4X protection for outdoor use (-20°C to +50°C), approved for hazardous areas (Ex-zone 1), max. 4 channels, max. 8 gas connections (including 1 optional purge gas) with flame arrestors. Weight: max. 63 kg.
  • Power Supply: Internal wide-range power supply (100-240V, 50/60 Hz) or 24V DC input (for X2GK).
  • Interfaces:
    • Analog Outputs: 1-4 outputs per channel (4-20 mA or 0-20 mA), electrically isolated, user-configurable concentration levels, NAMUR NE 43 support.
    • Status Relays: 4 standard relays (30 V, 1 A, 30 W resistive) configured for NAMUR NE 44 ("Failure," "Maintenance request," "Out of specification," "Function check"), user-assignable functions.
    • Modbus Interface (Serial/Ethernet): RS 232 or RS 485 (serial) via 9-pin submin-D connector, or Ethernet (RJ45 socket) for Modbus TCP/IP. Electrically isolated.
    • Digital Inputs/Outputs: Groups of 7 or 14 digital inputs, and 9 or 18 digital outputs for controlling analyzer functions and external components.

  • Gas Conditioning: All gases must be dry, dust-free, and free of aggressive components. Heated areas can be optionally installed to avoid condensation and environmental temperature influences.

Usage Features

  • User Interface: Intuitive menu-based system with a 4x20 character alphanumeric display.
  • Calibration: Supports manual, advanced, remote, and unattended automatic calibrations. Advanced calibration allows single-key activation for zero, span, or zero & span calibrations for all channels, utilizing internal/external valves and considering purge times. Remote calibration can be initiated via digital inputs or Modbus commands. Unattended automatic calibration allows programming of time intervals for automatic valve-supported calibrations without user interaction.
  • Data Management: Configuration data can be backed up and restored to/from protected internal memory (UserData) or an external device (SvcPort) via a serial interface.
  • Access Levels: Four prioritized access levels (User, Expert, Administrator, Service) with password protection to prevent unauthorized configuration changes.
  • Alarm Management: Two concentration limits can be set per channel with configurable functions (Low, High, Failsafe) and hysteresis. Flow limits can also be set for flow sensors.

Maintenance Features

  • Visual Inspections: Annual checks for tubing (leakage, embrittlement, contamination), pressure sensors/switches/flowmeters (corrosion, leakage), pumps (fixed screws, free movement), valve blocks (corrosion, leakage), flame arrestors (corrosion, damages, firmly seated), and field housing components (corrosion, damages, firmly seated).
  • Tests: Annual leak tests for gas paths, pump diaphragm leak tests (every 5,000 operating hours), and monthly/quarterly RAW measuring value checks for contamination of optical components.
  • Component Replacement: Instructions are provided for replacing electrochemical oxygen sensors, trace oxygen sensors, trace moisture sensors, and sample pump diaphragms. Special safety instructions are emphasized for handling toxic/flammable gases, electrical shock, and electrostatic discharge during maintenance.
  • Troubleshooting: Comprehensive tables for solving problems indicated by status messages (e.g., flow alarms, NVRAM failures, temperature out of spec) and problems not indicated by status messages (e.g., dark display, no analog output, serial communication issues).
  • Service Interface: A dedicated serial RS 232 interface for service personnel or specially trained staff for data transfer and advanced diagnostics.

The X-STREAM X2 series is designed for robust and reliable operation in various industrial settings, with a strong emphasis on user-friendability, comprehensive diagnostics, and maintainability.
