Handling the Switch
Topreventelectrostaticdamage,attachanelectrostaticdischarge
(ESD)wriststraptoyourwristbeforehandlingtheswitch.
Unpacktheswitchasfollows:
1. Removethepackingmaterialprotectingtheswitch.
2. Removethetapesealonthenonconductivebagtoremovethe
switch.
3. Performavisualinspectionoftheswitchforanysigns
of
physicaldamage.ContactEnterasysNetworksifthereareany
signsofdamage.See“GettingHelp”formoreinformationon
contactingEnterasysNetworks.
Stacking Switches
UptoeightC5switchescanbestackedtogetherandconnectedby
highspeedstackingcables,whichallowtheentirestacktooperate
withasingleIPaddress.
TheC5supportsthefollowinghighspeedstackingcablesonly,
whichyoumustorderseparately:
•STKCABSHORT
•STKCABLONG
•STKCAB2M
•STK
CAB5M

Connecting Power to the Switch
Youcanconnecttoasingle,primarysourceofpower,ortotwo
sourcesofpowerforredundancy.Theexampleusedhere
describesconnectingtotwopowersources.
Thefollowingredundantpowersuppliesareavailabletobe
purchasedfromEnterasysNetworksforconnectiontoaC5
switch:
•STKRPS150PS,a102
156wattDCpowersupplycapableof
providingpowertoafullyloadednonPoEswitch.
•STKRPS1005PS,a1005wattDCpowersupplyrecommended
forfullPoEcapability.
TopowerupyourC5switch:
1. Attachthepowercordfromyourredundantpowersupply
intotheC5switch’sredundantpowerreceptacle.
2. AttachtheACpowercordtotheC5switch’sACpower
receptacle.
3. PlugtheredundantpowersupplyandtheC5switchAC
powercordsintodedicated,groundedACoutlets.
4. Oncepowerisconnected,verifythattheCPU(system)LED
turnsamberuntiltheC5switchfinishesitsinitialization.
Iftheinitializationprocess
issuccessful,theCPULEDturnsgreen.
IftheCPULEDdoesnotturngreen,refertotheEnterasysC5
GigabitEthernetSwitchHardwareInstallationGuidefor
troubleshootinginformation.
Caution: The switch can be damaged by electrostatic discharge.
Note: You can stack a C5 switch only with other C5 switches.
Electrical Hazard: Only qualified personnel should perform
installation procedures.
Completing Switch Setup and Downloading the Latest
Firmware
OnceyouhaveconnectedpowertotheC5switchandverified
LEDactivity,youcancompletethesetupprocessasfollows.Refer
totheEnterasysC5GigabitEthernetSwitchHardwareInstallation
Guideformoreinformation.
1. DeterminethelatestC5firmwareversionbyvisitingthe
EnterasysNetworksdownloadsiteat:
http://secure.enterasys.com/services/support/downloads/software
2. Connecttheswitchtothenetwork.
3. Connectamanagementstationtotheconsoleport.
4. Verifythatthenetworkdevicesconnectedtotheswitchports
arepoweredon,andthateachlink/activityLEDison(solid
greenorblinkinggreen).
5. Atthedeviceconnectedtotheconsoleport,performthe
following:
a. Enteradminfor
Username.
b. AtthePasswordprompt,pressENTER(RETURN).
c. Atthecommandprompt,determineifthelatestfirmware
imageisloadedontheswitchbyenteringthiscommand:
show version
d. Iftheoutput(underFWVer sio n)displaysanolderversion
numberthanthatdeterminedinstep1,downloadand
activatethenewversionasdirectedonthedownload
website.(Alternatively,youcanusetheCLIcommands
listedinTable 1.)
