Overview

This document provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for an Epson scanner, addressing common issues users might encounter during operation, scanning, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Epson scanner is designed to convert physical documents, photos, and film into digital images. It supports various scanning modes, including Full Auto Mode, Home Mode, Office Mode, and Professional Mode, each offering different levels of control over the scanning process. The scanner can produce multiple image types, such as color, grayscale, and black & white, and supports various output formats like JPEG, TIFF, and PDF. It can scan single or multiple document pages into a single PDF file, and also offers the ability to create searchable PDF files (Windows only) using ABBYY FineReader software. The device features four buttons for common scanning operations: Scan to PDF, Scan to E-mail, Copy, and Start, alongside status lights to indicate its operational state.

Usage Features

Starting and Basic Operation:

To begin scanning, users should ensure the scanner's blue status light has stopped flashing, indicating it's ready. The scanner must be powered on and securely connected to the computer via a USB cable. It is recommended to use the provided USB cable and connect the scanner directly to a computer's USB port or through a single self-powered USB hub to avoid connectivity issues. The computer must support USB. For TWAIN-compliant programs like Adobe Photoshop Elements, users need to select the correct Epson scanner as the Scanner or Source setting. If the operating system has been upgraded, Epson Scan software may need to be reinstalled.

Scanning Quality and Color Adjustment:

Users can address issues with scanned colors differing from originals by adjusting several settings. The "Image Type" setting (Office, Home, or Professional Mode) should be checked for correctness. In the "Color" tab of the Configuration settings, the "Display Gamma" can be adjusted to match the output device (monitor or printer). "Auto Exposure" in Professional Mode can be fine-tuned, and different "Tone Correction" settings can be explored. "Color Control" and "Continuous auto exposure" in the Color menu can also be enabled. If settings are over-adjusted, the "Recommended Value" option in the Color tab can restore default Auto Exposure. Enabling "Quality Preview" in the Preview tab can help visualize changes. For accurate color matching, enabling the "Embed ICC Profile" setting in the File Save Settings window (when saving as JPEG or TIFF) is crucial. Users should also verify their computer's color matching and management capabilities, and consider adding a color profile for their monitor.

Resolution Selection:

The choice of scanning resolution depends on the intended use of the scanned image. For e-mailing, web uploads, or screen viewing, 96 to 150 dpi is suggested. For printing or converting to editable text (OCR), 300 to 400 dpi is recommended. Searchable PDFs also benefit from 200 to 400 dpi. For ink jet printing, 150 dpi (color/grayscale) or 360 dpi (black & white) for normal quality, and 300 dpi (color/grayscale) or 720 dpi (black & white) for high quality are advised. Page printers typically use 200 dpi (color/grayscale) or 600 dpi (black & white). For faxing, 200 dpi is sufficient. If enlarging an image after scanning, the resolution setting should be increased proportionally (e.g., doubling image size requires doubling dpi).

Addressing Image Imperfections:

  • Dark Images: For dark originals, the "Backlight Correction" feature (Home or Professional Mode) can be used. "Brightness" settings in Office, Home, or Professional Mode should be checked. "Display Gamma," "Color Control," and "Continuous auto exposure" settings in the Color tab can be adjusted. The "Histogram Adjustment" icon in Professional Mode allows for brightness fine-tuning.
  • Lines/Dots: Persistent lines or dots often indicate a dirty document table or transparency unit window, requiring cleaning. If the issue persists, the glass may be scratched, necessitating Epson Support contact.
  • Few Dots: Ensure the document is placed face down on the document table. For Black&White scanning in Office, Home, or Professional Mode, adjusting the "Threshold" setting may help.
  • Text/Image from Back: For thin originals, placing a piece of black paper behind the original can prevent bleed-through. Scanning software settings like image type and image adjustment, or the "Text Enhancement" function, can also be used.
  • Crooked Lines: Ensure the document is placed perfectly straight on the document table.
  • Distorted Images: Ensure documents/photos lie flat, are not wrinkled or warped, and do not move during scanning. The scanner should be on a flat, stable surface. "Unsharp Mask" (Office or Professional Mode) can be selected, and "Auto Exposure" (Professional Mode) adjusted. "Color Control" and "Continuous auto exposure" in the Color tab can be enabled. Increasing the "Resolution" setting may also help.
  • Patchy/Distorted Edges: For thick or curled documents, covering the edges with paper can block external light.
  • OCR Issues: Ensure the document is straight on the table. In Office or Home Mode, select "Text Enhancement." Adjusting the "Threshold" setting (especially for Black&White image types) can improve OCR accuracy. Users should also consult their OCR software manual for additional settings.
  • Ripple Patterns (Moiré): For printed documents, selecting the "Descreening" check box (Office, Home, or Professional Mode) can help. In Professional Mode, an appropriate "Screen Ruling" can be chosen, and "Unsharp Mask" deselected. A lower "Resolution" setting can also mitigate moiré. Note that moiré cannot be removed for film, monochrome images, or resolutions higher than 600 dpi.
  • Shadows from Backlight: The "Backlight Correction" feature can remove shadows from photos with excessive background light.
  • Incorrect Rotation: Ensure documents/photos/film are placed correctly. For thumbnail previews, images can be manually rotated. Disabling or enabling "Auto Photo Orientation" may also resolve this. Note that Auto Photo Orientation may not work for certain document types or small images.
  • Cropped/Incorrect Size (PDF): In Home or Professional Mode, click the "Options" button under "Image Format," then select "Actual Image Size" for "Paper Size" in the EPSON PDF Plug-in Settings.
  • Striped Rings (Newton Rings) on Film/Slides: This often occurs with curled film. Place film/slides with the base side up, preview using thumbnail preview, then flip the previewed image using the mirroring icon.
  • DIGITAL ICE Ineffectiveness: Try rotating the image 90 or 180 degrees and scanning again.
  • Thumbnail Preview Adjustment Issues: Create or adjust marquees to select the desired scan area. In Configuration, under the Preview tab, adjust the "Thumbnail Cropping Area" slider. Alternatively, use normal preview and create marquees.
  • Edges Not Scanning: In Full Auto Mode or thumbnail preview (Home/Professional Mode), move the document/photo about 6 mm (0.2 inch) away from the horizontal and vertical edges. In normal preview (Office/Home/Professional Mode), move it about 3 mm (0.12 inch) away.

Status Lights:

  • Green On: Power is on.
  • Green Flashing: Entering power saving mode.
  • Orange Flashing: An error has occurred. This requires checking scanner connection, software installation, and restarting the scanner. If the issue persists, the scanner may be malfunctioning or need a light source replacement.
  • Blue Flashing: Initializing or scanning.
  • (None) Off: Scanner is off.

Scanning Multiple Images/Pages:

For multiple images, position photos at least 20 mm (0.8 inches) apart on the document table. For multi-page PDF scanning, use the PDF button on the scanner or Epson Scan software. Epson Scan allows scanning multiple pages into a single PDF, creating searchable PDFs (Windows only), and specifying the maximum number of pages per PDF file. ABBYY FineReader is required for some of these features.

Dust and Scratch Removal:

The "Dust Removal" feature in Epson Scan (Full Auto or Professional Mode) can virtually clean dust marks. For photos, color film, or slides, "DIGITAL ICE Technology" (Home or Professional Mode) offers a more accurate hardware-based dust removal method.

Copy Machine Functionality:

The scanner can be used with a connected printer as a copy machine.

Software Updates and Reinstallation:

The latest product software for Windows or Mac can be obtained from the Downloads tab on the product support page. If Epson Scan software is not working properly, ensure the computer meets minimum system requirements and try reinstalling the software after uninstalling it. If Microsoft Office 2013 applications crash after installing Epson software, update ABBYY FineReader by checking for updates within the software. If a "Could not copy file" error occurs during driver installation, clear the Temp folder, restart the computer, and reinstall Epson Scan. If scans no longer preview, open EPSON Scan, click Configuration, select the Other tab, and click Reset All. If an "Image size is too large" message appears, reduce the Resolution, Scale, or Document Size.

Network Capability:

The scanner does not support scanning over a network.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning the Product:

Regular cleaning ensures optimal scanner operation.

  1. Turn off the scanner and unplug the AC power cord and USB cable.
  2. Clean the outer case with a cloth dampened with mild detergent and water.
  3. Clean the glass surface of the document table with a soft dry cloth. For grease or stubborn stains, use a small amount of glass cleaner on a soft cloth, wiping off all remaining liquid. Caution: Do not spray glass cleaner directly on the scanner glass.
  4. Remove the document mat and clean the transparency unit window. Important: Do not scratch or damage the glass surface, as this can decrease scan quality. Never use alcohol, thinner, or corrosive solvents. Avoid spilling liquid into the scanner mechanism or electronic components, and do not spray lubricants inside. Never open the scanner case. Ensure no dust builds up on the document table or transparency unit window, as dust can cause spots in scanned images.

Transporting the Product:

Before transporting or storing the scanner for an extended period, ensure the carriage is in the home position to prevent damage.

  1. If the carriage is not in the home position, turn on the scanner and wait for it to move there.
  2. Turn off the scanner, unplug the AC power cord, and disconnect the USB cable.
  3. On the back of the scanner, slide the transportation lock to the locked position to secure the carriage.
  4. Attach the original packing materials and repack the scanner in its original box or a similar snug-fitting box.
