Mechanical makeup valves need water pressure between 140 and 340 kPa to function correctly. If it's too high, install a pressure reducing valve. Second, the solenoid might be clogged with debris, so clean it out. Third, inspect the float or valve for damage and replace if necessary. Fourth, check the ball for leaks and replace it if needed.

Often, it's foreign material like welding slag on the surface, especially around coil connections, the cold water basin near support steel, and field-erected platforms. Remove these rust spots by cleaning the surface regularly with a stainless steel cleaner and a Scotch-Brite pad.
