Overview

This document is an installation and configuration manual for the EVS Synapse SFR04, SFR08, and SFR18 frames, which are modular systems designed for the broadcast industry. These frames are the foundation of the Synapse system, offering high density, intuitive operation, and high-quality processing for various converter and processing modules.

Function Description

The SFR04, SFR08, and SFR18 frames are designed to house 4, 8, and 18 Synapse modular cards, respectively. The SFR04 is a 1RU (Rack Unit) high frame, the SFR08 is 2RU high, and the SFR18 is 4RU high. Each frame, in conjunction with a Rack Controller Card (ERC, ERS, RRC, or RRS) and a power supply (with optional redundant power supply in the SFR18 and SFR08), forms the core of the Synapse system.

A key feature of the Synapse frames is the unique ADD-ON daisy chain bus. This internal bus allows for the embedding of audio and even video signals from one card to another within the frame, eliminating the need for external physical wires. The daisy chain ADD-ON bus is passive, ensuring absolute stability. The ADD-ON principle can be initiated anywhere in the frame, with the ADD-ON card placed immediately to the right of the master card (front view). Both ADD-ON and master cards can operate standalone or in conjunction, with user-configurable settings for their position in the chain or via card settings. Up to sixteen channels of audio can be transported to or from a master card with a maximum of four ADD-ON cards. It also facilitates the transport of one DVI signal between cards, useful for multi-view modules. Beyond the ADD-ON chain, an internal bus distributes reference, power, and control/monitoring data to all cards autonomously.

The frames are equipped with a local control panel that provides access to all adjustable parameters and status information for any card, including the Synapse rack controller. This panel is also used for backing up and restoring card settings. Remote control capabilities are available, with connection to a computer via Ethernet, as detailed in the respective ERC, ERS, RRC, or RRS manuals. The "EVS Cortex" software is recommended for increased system flexibility, offering ease of use and understanding of the modules, and is available for free download from the EVS website.

Usage Features

  • Modular Design: Supports 4, 8, or 18 Synapse modular cards, allowing for flexible system configuration.
  • Rack Mounting: Fits standard 19” racks. Air-cooled racks are preferred, with a nominal distance of 2 mm recommended when stacking frames.
  • I/O-Panel Installation: The Synapse system uses color-coded connector and card-grip stickers to clearly identify card functions. Connector stickers are applied manually to the I/O-panel before installation. Placeholder back plates must be removed before inserting I/O-panels.
  • Front Panel Control: Provides access to all adjustable parameters and status information. Settings can be changed using cursor arrows for menu navigation and parameter adjustment. Pressing the right arrow twice during editing resets the value to its default.
  • EVS Cortex Software: Enhances system flexibility and ease of use, offering functions like back-up, restore, batch programming, and alarm logs. Downloadable for free from the EVS website.
  • Hot-Swappable Components:
    • SFR18 and SFR08 frames offer optional redundant power supplies that are hot-swappable, allowing replacement without powering off the frame.
    • SFR08 fans are front-removable and hot-swappable.

Maintenance Features

  • Installation and Service Actions: Installing the SFR frame, opening the front lid of the SFR18, and changing card configurations are considered service actions and must only be performed by trained service personnel.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always disconnect the entire system from AC mains before cleaning or servicing.
    • Ensure proper earth ground connection.
    • Never use flammable chemicals, operate with covers removed, or expose to liquids.
    • Do not block ventilation slots or bypass fuses.
    • Replace fuses only with specified values and types.
    • Do not attempt repairs; contact an EVS distributor.
    • Avoid extreme temperatures and explosive atmospheres.
    • The SFR18's front panel screws must be tightened after service to prevent unauthorized access and ensure safety.
    • Exposed power supply components are electrically "hot"; disconnect the power cord before removal.
    • Warning labels indicate energy hazards and areas requiring trained service personnel.
  • Fan Replacement:
    • SFR18: Fans are not hot-swappable. Power must be disconnected before replacement. Fans are accessed from the top of the frame by unscrewing two screws, unplugging the cable, and replacing the fan unit.
    • SFR04: No built-in fans; cooling is handled by the fan in the single power supply, which is not hot-swappable. Support department contact is required for replacement.
    • SFR08: Features a front-removable fan-tray located vertically between card slots. These fans are hot-swappable and can be pulled out by hand after unfolding the front of the SFR08.
  • Power Supply Replacement:
    • SFR18: Redundant power supplies are hot-swappable. A safety pal (black button) must be pulled to unlock the power supply before removal.
    • SFR04: Does not support redundant power supplies; the entire frame must be switched off for power supply replacement. The power supply is accessed from the front after unplugging the control panel's flat cable.
    • SFR08: Supports redundant power supplies, allowing hot-swapping. The power supply is accessed from the front after unplugging the control panel's flat cable.
    • Note: If only one power supply is present, ensure the frame is not in use or a redundant power supply is inserted before removal to prevent immediate shutdown. For any service, ensure both power cables are disconnected if redundant power supplies are in use.
