Overview

The Extech DL160 is a dual-input True RMS AC Voltage/Current Datalogger designed for monitoring and logging AC voltage and current data over extended periods. It can measure Voltage/Voltage, Current/Current, or Voltage/Current combinations, making it a versatile tool for various electrical monitoring applications. The device features an LCD display that provides real-time data, maximum/minimum readings, and time information.

Function Description:

The DL160 is capable of recording up to 262,144 data points for a single channel or 131,072 data points for dual channels, allowing for comprehensive data collection. Users can select a sample rate ranging from 1 second to 24 hours, providing flexibility for different monitoring durations and data granularity requirements. Once data is logged, it can be easily transferred to a PC via the USB port for viewing and evaluation using the provided software. The datalogger supports both continuous recording, where new data overwrites the oldest data when memory is full, and "record until full" mode, where recording stops once the memory is completely utilized.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Display: Multi-function LCD.
  • Maximum Data Points: 262,144 (single channel) or 131,072 (dual channel).
  • Channels: Dual channel, True RMS AC Voltage or Current.
  • Sample Rate: 1 second to 24 hours (selectable).
  • Data Output: USB port.
  • Current Clamp Jaw Opening: 0.5" (12.7mm).
  • Open Input Indication: "LO" appears on the LCD (also if measured value is less than 10V/10A).
  • Low Battery Indication: Empty battery symbol appears on the LCD.
  • Power Supply: 4 AAA Batteries and 1 CR 3V memory button battery (CR2032 or equivalent).
  • Battery Life: Approximately 5 days.
  • AC Adaptor: 9V, 0.5A.
  • Standards: CE, CAT III 600V, for inside use, maximum height 2000 meters.
  • Operating Temperature: 32 to 122°F (0 to 50°C).
  • Operating Humidity: <70% RH.
  • Storage Temperature: -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C).
  • Storage Humidity: <80% relative humidity.
  • Dimensions: 4.5 x 2.5 x 1.3" (114 x 63 x 34mm).
  • Weight: 8.7oz. (248g).

Measurement Ranges and Accuracy:

  • Voltage (40Hz to 1kHz): 10VAC to 600.0VAC, with an accuracy of ±2.0%±1V.
  • Current (50/60Hz): 10A to 200.0A, with an accuracy of ±2.0%±1A.

Usage Features:

The DL160 is designed for user-friendly operation. After setting up the datalogger with the PC software, users can initiate recording by pressing and holding the START/STOP button for four seconds. The "REC" icon on the LCD confirms that recording has begun. To stop recording, the same button is pressed and held for four seconds. It's important to note that once recording is stopped, the meter must be reprogrammed using the software before recording can be started again.

The device features a MAX/MIN button, which, when pressed once, displays the maximum reading, and when pressed again, displays the minimum reading. A third press exits this mode, or it automatically exits after 10 seconds of inactivity. The CHANNEL button allows users to select which channel's data is displayed on the LCD.

For AC current measurements, the integrated current clamp jaw can be clamped around a single conductor. For voltage measurements, AC voltage probes or alligator clips are connected to the CH Input Jacks. The device supports both single-phase (one lead to phase, one to neutral) and multi-phase (one lead to one phase, one to another phase) voltage connections.

An auto power-off feature conserves battery life by shutting down the meter after 5 minutes of inactivity, though this feature is disabled during recording. The battery status indicator on the LCD provides a visual cue for battery levels, prompting replacement when necessary.

Maintenance Features:

To ensure reliable operation, the DL160 requires 4 fresh AAA batteries or can be powered via an AC adapter. An internal 3V button battery (CR2032 or equivalent) maintains the clock's correct time; if the clock is inaccurate, this battery should be replaced.

When cleaning the meter, it is recommended to use a damp cloth and mild detergent, avoiding abrasives or solvents. For long-term storage, the AAA batteries should be removed.

Safety is paramount, and users are advised against making measurements in flammable gaseous areas, using the instrument with wet hands, or inputting over-range values. The battery cover should never be opened during measurements, and the meter should not be used if there are structural defects or exposed metal parts. The device should be kept away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, high moisture environments, and high vibration areas.

The DL160 comes with a two-year warranty from Teledyne FLIR, with a six-month limited warranty for sensors and cables. Calibration and repair services are available through Teledyne FLIR, with annual calibrations recommended to verify performance and accuracy. The latest PC software and user manual translations are available on the Extech website.
