Overview

The Fender Duel Pugilist Distortion is a guitar effects pedal designed to provide a versatile range of distortion voicings. It builds upon the popular Pugilist pedal, offering new combinations and three distinct operating modes to deliver a powerful and flexible distortion experience.

Function Description:

The core function of the Duel Pugilist Distortion is to introduce various levels and types of distortion to an electric guitar, bass, acoustic guitar with pickup systems, keyboards, or other instruments. It features two independent distortion circuits, referred to as Distortion A and Distortion B, which can be configured in different ways via the Mode Switch.

  • Series Mode: In this mode, the two distortion circuits are stacked sequentially, mimicking the effect of running two separate distortion pedals in series. This allows for complex and layered distortion tones.
  • Parallel Mode: This mode enables blending of the two different distortion circuits. Users can mix the output of Distortion A and Distortion B, or even blend a clean signal with a distorted sound, offering a wider sonic palette. The Blend control is active in this mode to adjust the balance between the two circuits.
  • Mute Mode: This mode is designed for creating a main tone with one distortion circuit, while layering an additional distortion on top for added richness and complexity. The footswitches, when in Mute mode, will mute the output of the respective distortion circuit, allowing for dynamic switching between tones. The Blend control is also active in this mode.

The pedal also includes a Bypass Footswitch/LED to engage or bypass the overall effect. When engaged, the LED illuminates. Each distortion circuit (A and B) also has its own footswitch and LED. When the Mode is set to Series or Bypass, these footswitches will bypass their respective distortion effects. When the Mode is set to Mute, the footswitch mutes the output of the distortion circuit.

Usage Features:

The Duel Pugilist Distortion offers a comprehensive set of controls for shaping the distortion sound:

  • High EQ (9) and Low EQ (4): These controls adjust the overall pedal equalization and are active in all modes, except when the pedal is bypassed. This allows for global tone shaping.
  • Mode Switch (5): This switch selects among Series, Parallel, and Mute operating modes, fundamentally altering how the two distortion circuits interact.
  • Blend (10): This control is active in Parallel and Mute modes. It adjusts the balance between the two distortion circuits or between a clean signal and a distorted signal. It is disabled in Series mode.
  • Distortion A Controls:
    • Level (11): Adjusts the output level of the Distortion A circuit.
    • Tone (12): Adjusts the brightness of the Distortion A circuit.
    • Gain (13): Adjusts the sustain or drive for the Distortion A circuit.
  • Distortion B Controls:
    • Level (6): Adjusts the output level of the Distortion B circuit.
    • Tone (7): Adjusts the brightness of the Distortion B circuit.
    • Gain (8): Adjusts the sustain or drive for the Distortion B circuit.
  • LED Kill Switch (17): This switch deactivates the illumination of the control knobs, which can be useful in certain stage lighting conditions or to conserve power.
  • Footswitches:
    • Bypass Footswitch/LED (1): Engages or bypasses the entire effect.
    • Distortion A Footswitch/LED (2): Controls Distortion A, with its function varying based on the selected mode.
    • Distortion B Footswitch/LED (3): Controls Distortion B, with its function varying based on the selected mode.

The LED-backlit knobs are a practical feature, ensuring that control settings are easily visible at a glance, even on dark stages. The pedal is designed with a robust anodized aluminum chassis, ensuring durability.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Unplug the AC power adapter before cleaning the unit's exterior. Use only a damp cloth for cleaning and wait until the unit is completely dry before reconnecting to power.
  • Servicing: No user-serviceable parts are inside the unit. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel only.
  • Power Source: The unit must only be connected to a safety agency certified, regulated power source (adapter) approved for use and compliant with applicable local and national regulatory safety requirements.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • To prevent damage, fire, or shock hazard, do not expose the unit or its AC power to rain or moisture.
    • Do not alter the AC plug of the connected power adapter.
    • Do not drip or splash liquids on the unit.
    • Amplifiers and loudspeaker systems, and ear/headphones (if equipped) are capable of producing very high sound pressure levels, which may cause temporary or permanent hearing damage. Use care when setting and adjusting volume levels during use.
