Overview

The device is a wall-mountable infrared heater, designed for comfort, quality, and style. It is intended for both sheltered exterior and indoor use, but should not be exposed to rain or moisture, and is for residential use only.

Function Description

This infrared heater provides warmth using a quartz halogen lamp. It is designed to be wall-mounted and can be swiveled to direct heat to a desired position. The unit operates on a dedicated electrical circuit and features a safety tilt switch that automatically shuts off power if the unit is accidentally knocked over or tilted past 15 degrees. The heater is not equipped with a device to control room temperature and should not be used in small rooms by persons not capable of leaving the room on their own, unless constant supervision is provided.

    • 12" from surfaces above the heater head unit
    • 36" from sides and front of head unit
    • 45-55 degree angle of operational spread for optimal operation and output.

Usage Features

The heater is designed for easy wall mounting. Users should ensure the mounting bracket is securely fastened to the wall, patio overhang, or house eave. The electrical cable must be routed away from the main body of the heater, which gets very hot during operation. It is crucial not to cover or obstruct the main body of the heater during use.

For optimal performance and safety, the infrared heater head should be operated at a minimum height of 84" with a 45-55 degree angle of operational spread. The head unit can be swiveled up or down to the desired position. If the swivel bracket becomes too loose, the hex nuts and bolts at the swivel points on the head unit bracket should be tightened.

The appliance must be grounded. When used outdoors, a certified GFI (Ground Fault Interrupt) outlet is recommended to protect against electrical shock. All installations must comply with IEE safety regulations or equivalent. The unit must be plugged into a dedicated electrical circuit. Avoid using an extension cord; if one must be used, it should be at least a 14/3 wire, grounded cord, and no longer than 50 ft.

It is important to keep combustible materials such as furniture, papers, clothes, and curtains at least 3 ft (0.91 m) from the front, sides, and rear of the heating unit. The heater should not be placed near a bed or in bathrooms, laundry areas, or similar areas where water may be present. Always unplug the heater when not in use.

Upon first use, it is normal for the heater to emit a mild "new heater" smell, which will quickly dissipate. The unit comes equipped with a safety tilt switch that will automatically shut off power if the unit is accidentally knocked over or tilted past 15 degrees. To reset, unplug the unit from the wall outlet, reposition it on a flat, level surface, and plug it back in.

Maintenance Features

This infrared heating system is virtually maintenance-free, requiring only a few minutes to wipe down exposed surfaces. For cleaning the head unit and aluminum shield, use any non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth to wipe off debris and dirt from the exposed surfaces of the aluminum shield and outer body of the head unit and outer grill. Never spray any liquids or cleaners into the housing area where the halogen lamp is located. Do not attempt to disassemble or clean the inner cavity where the halogen bulb is located. For any maintenance on the head unit, users should contact customer service.

Halogen Bulb Replacement: Replacement bulbs and parts should be ordered through the toll-free customer hotline to ensure approved original equipment. When handling the new halogen lamp, do NOT touch it with bare fingers, as oils can reduce lamp life. Clean cotton or plastic gloves, or a clean paper towel, are recommended for handling.

Before replacing the bulb, ensure the heater is turned off and disconnected from the electrical outlet.

  1. Unplug the heater and remove the head unit assembly from the telescopic pole.
  2. Remove screws from each end of the head unit and pull off end plates. Note the placement of the two small sheet metal screws on each end plate and that the end plate side with beveled holes faces outward when re-assembled.
  3. Pull out and remove the left and right front air vent panels and protective wire grill. Note the position of end clips on the vent panel; they must be aligned as close to the end connectors of the lamp tube as possible when re-assembled. Do NOT allow metal parts to touch the actual lamp tube when re-assembled.
  4. Gently pull out the entire old bulb assembly from the clips at the terminal connection ends. Slide and lift the connection ends out from the friction clips by gently pushing them apart. Unscrew wire leads from the terminal and remove the old bulb assembly.
  5. Using gloves, gently re-insert the connection ends of the NEW bulb assembly into the friction clips. Pull apart the clips slightly and gently push the connectors into place. Do not allow the metal clips to touch the bulb tube. The clips should be about at the center point of the end connectors.
  6. Re-install the safety grill (fitting along grooves in the housing body), then re-insert the vent panels by gently pushing the end clips into the housing body. Align clip ends close to the lamp end connectors and push into place. Re-attach end plates, ensuring the side with beveled holes faces out.

Storage: Always unplug the unit when not in use. The IR head unit can be left outside in a covered, protected location during the season. For moderate adverse weather conditions, wrapping the head unit in plastic and tape or a bungee cord is recommended. For extreme weather conditions, it is recommended to remove the unit from the wall bracket and store it in a safe, dry indoor location. When not in use for extended periods, the IR Head Unit can be easily removed from the wall mounting bracket for indoor storage. The halogen bulb is fragile, so be careful not to hit or jar the head unit. Store the unit in a dry location on a soft, cushioned surface, and ensure the electrical cord is properly coiled and out of the way.

Warranty: The product comes with a limited 1-year warranty from the original purchase date against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use, with proof of purchase from an authorized retailer. This warranty does not cover normal wear/weathering, exposure to water, freezing temperatures, oils, fluids, or chemicals, or commercial use if not designated as a commercial model. The warranty can be extended for an additional year by reviewing the item at balkenehome.com within 365 days of purchase.
