Overview

This document is an installation and user guide for Elba ceramic glass cooktops, specifically models CE302 and CE604, manufactured by Fisher & Paykel. It covers safety warnings, installation instructions, usage guidelines, care and cleaning, troubleshooting, and warranty information for New Zealand and Australian markets.

Function Description

The Elba ceramic glass cooktops are designed for domestic cooking. They feature multiple cooking zones on a ceramic glass surface, controlled by individual knobs. The cooktops provide heat for various cooking tasks, from simmering to searing, and are equipped with safety features like 'Hot surface' indicators.

Important Technical Specifications

Cooktop and Cutout Dimensions (mm):

Feature CE302 CE604
Overall width of cooktop 300 578
Overall depth of cooktop 510 511
Height of chassis (below top of bench) 45 52
Height of chassis incl. terminal block (below top of bench) 63 52
Width of chassis 267 553
Depth of chassis 483 483
Overall width of cutout 270 560
Overall depth of cutout 490 490

Clearances (mm):

Feature CE302 CE604
Minimum clearance from rear edge of cutout to nearest combustible surface 55 55
Minimum clearance from glass surface to rangehood 650 650
Minimum clearance from side edges of cutout to nearest combustible surface 65 85
Minimum clearance from benchtop to overhead cabinet not directly above the cooktop 450 450
Minimum clearance below top of benchtop to thermal protection barrier 65 92

Power Supply:

  • CE302: 3000W @ 220-240V ~ (13 A)
  • CE604: 6000-6500 W @ 230-240/400-415V 3N~ (26-27 A)

The cooktop must be connected to a circuit that includes an isolating switch for full disconnection from the power supply, providing a 3 mm air gap contact separation in all poles (or all active conductors if local wiring rules permit). The power supply cable must not touch hot parts and its temperature should not exceed 75°C.

Thermal Protection Barrier: The thermal protection barrier, if required, must be removable, heat-resistant, made from low thermal conductivity material, and positioned at least 40 mm (CE604) or 20 mm (CE302) below the cooktop base to ensure adequate ventilation.

Usage Features

Controls: The cooktops feature control knobs for each cooking zone. To begin cooking, users turn the knob to the 'High' setting and then adjust as needed. Once cooking is complete, the knob should be turned to the 'Off' (O) position.

Indicators:

  • 'Cooking zone On' indicator light: Glows when a cooking zone is active.
  • 'Hot surface' indicator light: Glows when a cooking zone is turned off but the glass surface is still hot enough to cause burns. This light remains on until the surface is cool enough to be safely touched.

Cooking Guidelines:

  • Cookware: Use heavy-gauge, flat, smooth-based cookware that matches the diameter of the cooking zone for optimal contact and reduced cooking times. Stainless steel sandwich base or enamelled cast iron cookware is recommended. Avoid cookware with jagged edges or rough bases, as these can scratch the glass. Pans should always be lifted, not slid, across the cooktop. Plastic or aluminum foil dishes should never be used. Aluminum and copper-based cookware can leave metallic stains.
  • Heat Retention: The ceramic glass surface retains heat even after a cooking zone is turned off, which can continue cooking food. Pans should be removed from hot zones to prevent overcooking.
  • General Tips: Using a lid reduces cooking times. Minimize liquid for faster cooking. Start cooking on a high setting and reduce heat once food boils or heats through.
  • Searing Steak: Instructions include preparing meat at room temperature, heating a heavy-based frying pan, oiling and seasoning the steak, placing it on the hot pan, turning only once, and allowing it to rest after cooking.

Maintenance Features

Care and Cleaning:

  • Safety First: Always switch off the power to the cooktop at the wall before cleaning. The 'Hot surface' indicator will not be active when power is off, so extreme care must be taken as zones may still be hot.
  • Cleaning Agents: Do not use steam cleaners, scourers, or harsh/abrasive cleaning agents as they can scratch the ceramic glass or stainless steel.
  • Light Soiling (after every use): Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent (microfibre or 'glass' cloth is ideal), then dry with a clean cloth or paper towel. Ensure the glass is at a safe temperature to touch before cleaning.
  • Non-Sugary Boilovers/Stains: Remove with ceramic cooktop cleaner using a sponge or non-abrasive scourer suitable for ceramic glass. Remove excess cleaner and dry. Apply ceramic cooktop conditioner or protector. Avoid leaving cleaner residue.
  • Hot Sugary Spills, Melted Plastic/Metal: These must be removed immediately with a spatula or razor blade scraper (held at a 30° angle) to a cool area of the cooktop. Clean up immediately with a dish cloth or paper towel. If left to cool, they can permanently damage the glass surface. The scraper blade is razor-sharp and should be used with extreme care and stored safely out of reach of children.
  • Metallic Stains (copper/aluminum base): Follow instructions for non-sugary boilovers. For stubborn stains, use a razor blade scraper at a 30° angle. If not cleaned after every use, these stains can burn onto the surface and become permanent, though they do not affect performance.
  • Surround Strip (CE604 models only): Wipe with a damp cloth and mild household detergent, then dry with a microfibre cloth. For brushed stainless steel strips, a suitable stainless steel cleaner and polish can be used. Immediately wipe off any cleaner spilled onto control knobs. Avoid cleaners containing chlorine compounds.
  • Control Knobs: Wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Do not use stainless steel cleaner on knobs as it may damage their coating.

Troubleshooting: The guide provides a troubleshooting chart for common issues:

  • Cooking zones not turning on: Check power supply, wall switch, and for power outages. If issues persist, contact an Authorized Repairer.
  • Cooking zones not turning off: Switch off power at the wall and contact an Authorized Repairer.
  • Cooking zones cycling off and on: This is normal to maintain selected settings or prevent overheating.
  • Metal sheen on glass: Refer to 'Care and cleaning' for cookware with copper or aluminum bases.
  • Glass being scratched: Use cookware with flat, smooth bases and suitable, non-abrasive cleaning agents. Refer to 'Cooking guidelines' and 'Care and cleaning'.

Safety Warnings: The manual emphasizes several critical safety warnings, including:

  • Electrical Shock Hazard: Disconnect from mains before maintenance. Proper earthing is essential. Only qualified electricians should alter wiring.
  • Cut Hazard: Panel edges are sharp during installation. Cooktop scraper blades are razor-sharp.
  • Fire Hazard: Never leave unattended. Boilovers can ignite. Do not use for room heating.
  • Hot Surface Hazard: Accessible parts become hot. Avoid contact with ceramic glass until cool. Keep children away. Check saucepan handles.

The document concludes with a final checklist for installers and a section for product details and warranty information.
