1 Equipment Check
1.1 Follow plant safety regulations prior to equipment disassembly:
1.1.1 Wear designated personal safety equipment
1.1.2 Isolate equipment and relieve any pressure in the system
1.1.3 Lock out equipment driver and valves
1.1.4 Consult plant Safety Data Sheet (SDS) files for hazardous material regulations
1.2 Disassemble equipment in accordance with the equipment manufacturer’s instructions
to allow access to seal installation area.
1.3 Remove existing sealing arrangement (mechanical seal or otherwise).
Clean seal chamber and shaft thoroughly.
1.4 Inspect surfaces under gaskets to ensure they are free from pits or scratches. Break all sharp
corners on shaft steps, threads, reliefs, shoulders, key ways, etc. over which gasket(s) must
pass and/or seal against.
1.5 Check shaft or sleeve OD, seal chamber bore, seal chamber depth, gland pilot, stud diameter,
stud bolt pattern and distance to first obstruction to ensure they are dimensionally the same
as shown in the seal assembly drawing.
1.6 Check seal assembly drawings for any modifications (reworks) to be made to the equipment
for mechanical seal installation and act accordingly.
1.7 The equipment must be earthed to prevent sparks due to static electricity discharge.

Summary

Equipment Check

Plant Safety Regulations

Follow plant safety regulations, wear PPE, isolate equipment, lock out, and consult SDS.

Equipment Disassembly and Cleaning

Disassemble per manufacturer, remove seal, clean chamber and shaft thoroughly.

Surface Inspection and Preparation

Inspect surfaces for pits/scratches, break sharp corners on shaft steps, threads, reliefs.

Dimensional Checks

Check shaft runout, endplay, radial play, chamber squareness, and concentricity.

Surface Finish Requirements

Check surface finish of seal housing, bore, and shaft (e.g., 1.6 µm Ra for housing).

Dimensional & Drawing Checks

Verify dimensions and review assembly drawings for any modifications.

Equipment Earthing

Ensure equipment is earthed to prevent sparks from static electricity discharge.

Single End Suction Vertical Split Case Pumps

Marking Shaft/Sleeve and Setting Point

Scribe marks on shaft/sleeve for seal housing alignment and setting point.

Lubrication of Seal Components

Lightly lubricate shaft/sleeve and O-rings/gaskets with provided lubricant.

Stationary Face Installation

Press stationary face into gland using hand pressure, nesting O-ring if applicable.

Gland and Rotating Component Installation

Install gland over shaft, then rotating components in sequence, handle PTFE carefully.

Setting Spring Holder and Final Assembly

Set spring holder, tighten set screws, wipe seal faces clean before final assembly.

Gland Positioning and Tightening

Position gland, ensure pilot engagement, tighten nuts evenly per torque recommendations.

Double Suction and Multistage Horizontal Split Case Pumps

Marking Shaft/Sleeve and Setting Point

Scribe marks on shaft/sleeve for seal housing alignment and setting point.

Lubrication of Seal Components

Lightly lubricate shaft/sleeve and O-rings/gaskets with provided lubricant.

Rotating and Stationary Face Installation

Install rotating components, then stationary face into gland, handle PTFE carefully.

Setting Spring Holder and Final Assembly

Set spring holder, tighten set screws, wipe seal faces clean before final assembly.

Gland Positioning and Tightening

Position gland, ensure pilot engagement, tighten nuts evenly per torque recommendations.

Vertical In-line Pumps

Procedure for Back Pullout/Non-Rigid Couplings

Use procedure for single end suction vertical split case pumps for these designs.

Marking Shaft/Sleeve and Setting Point

Scribe marks on shaft/sleeve for seal housing alignment and setting point.

Lubrication of Seal Components

Lightly lubricate shaft/sleeve and O-rings/gaskets with silicone lubricant.

Component Installation and Setting

Install rotating components, set spring holder, and install stationary face into gland.

Gland Positioning and Tightening

Position gland, ensure pilot engagement, tighten nuts evenly per torque recommendations.

Operational Recommendations

Startup Procedure

Do not start dry; vent air, circulate clean fluid through seal chamber before startup.

Troubleshooting Hot Seals

If seal runs hot, check setting, dimensions, and bypass/flush lines for obstructions.

Repair

Seal Repair Guidelines

Use only Flowserve parts for repair. Stock spare seals to reduce repair time.

Return for Repair Procedure

Decontaminate seal, include SDS, and mark order 'Repair or Replace'.
