1 Equipment Check
1.1 Follow plant safety regulations prior to equipment disassembly:
1.1.1 Wear designated personal safety equipment
1.1.2 Isolate equipment and relieve any pressure in the system
1.1.3 Lock out equipment driver and valves
1.1.4 Consult plant Safety Data Sheet (SDS) files for hazardous material regulations
1.2 Disassemble equipment in accordance with the equipment manufacturer’s instructions
to allow access to seal installation area.
1.3 Remove existing sealing arrangement (mechanical seal or otherwise).
Clean seal chamber and shaft thoroughly.
1.4 Inspect surfaces under gaskets to ensure they are free from pits or scratches. Break all sharp
corners on shaft steps, threads, reliefs, shoulders, key ways, etc. over which gasket(s) must
pass and/or seal against.
1.5 Check shaft or sleeve OD, seal chamber bore, seal chamber depth, gland pilot, stud diameter,
stud bolt pattern and distance to first obstruction to ensure they are dimensionally the same
as shown in the seal assembly drawing.
1.6 Check seal assembly drawings for any modifications (reworks) to be made to the equipment
for mechanical seal installation and act accordingly.
1.7 The equipment must be earthed to prevent sparks due to static electricity discharge.

Summary

Equipment Check

Follow plant safety regulations

Follow plant safety regulations prior to equipment disassembly.

Disassemble equipment per manufacturer instructions

Disassemble equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions for seal area access.

Remove and clean existing seal arrangement

Remove old seal and thoroughly clean seal chamber and shaft.

Inspect surfaces and break sharp corners

Inspect surfaces for pits/scratches and break sharp corners on shaft steps and threads.

Verify dimensional compliance with drawings

Check shaft, bore, and bolt pattern dimensions against seal assembly drawing.

Review drawings for modifications

Check seal assembly drawings for any required equipment modifications.

Ensure equipment earthing

Ensure equipment is earthed to prevent sparks from static electricity discharge.

Shaft runout check

Verify shaft runout against specifications, typically 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) TIR.

Shaft endplay check

Limit shaft endplay to 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) TIR, regardless of bearing type.

Radial bearing play check

Check radial bearing play against manufacturer specifications (0.05-0.10 mm typical).

Seal chamber squareness

Ensure seal chamber squareness to shaft centerline is within 0.0005 mm/mm.

Concentricity of shaft to seal chamber bore

Check shaft to seal chamber bore concentricity, max 0.125 mm (0.005 inch) TIR.

Surface finish requirements

Specifies required surface finish (Ra) for seal housing, bore, and shaft.

Installation

Lubricate shaft before installation

Lightly lubricate the shaft with silicone lubricant before installing the seal assembly.

Install cartridge seal assembly

Install the complete cartridge seal assembly over the shaft, taking care with O-rings.

Tighten gland bolts

Tighten gland bolts to the seal chamber evenly, cross staggering the adjustment.

Tighten sleeve collar set screws

Tighten sleeve collar set screws to the shaft, ensuring proper hardness and staggering.

Remove setting devices

Remove and store the setting devices from between the sleeve drive collar and gland.

Operational Recommendations

SL-5000 Operation

Do not start the equipment dry; always properly vent the pump of air.

SL-5000 Troubleshooting

If seal runs hot, check setting, housing dimensions, and flush lines for obstructions.

SL-5200 Operation

Start sealing liquid supply

Always start sealing liquid supply before equipment, ensuring pressure exceeds process fluid.

Seal liquid pressure limits

Seal liquid pressure must not exceed the pressure velocity rating of the seal design.

Verify cooling water

Ensure cooling water to the supply tank or circulator is on.

Avoid dry startup

Never start equipment dry; properly vent all air.

Troubleshoot overheating

If seal runs hot, check seal liquid flow and housing dimensions for over-compression.

Repair

Seal repair guidelines

Use only Flowserve parts for repair; order parts using part code and B/M number.

Return for repair procedure

Decontaminate seal assembly, include order marked 'Repair or Replace', and SDS.
