The Fluke MT4 MAX, MT4 MAX+, MT4 MAX IND, 59E, and 59E+ are infrared thermometers designed to measure surface temperature by detecting infrared energy radiated from a target's surface. These devices are intended for professional and environmental use.
Function Description
The primary function of these devices is non-contact temperature measurement using infrared technology. They are capable of displaying temperature readings in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. Key operational features include:
- Scanning: The thermometers can continuously scan and display temperature readings.
- Hold Function: A "HOLD" function allows users to freeze the current temperature reading on the display.
- Max/Min/Diff Modes: These modes enable the display of maximum, minimum, and differential temperatures during a scan, providing insights into temperature variations.
- Alarm HI/LO: Users can set high and low temperature alarms. When the measured temperature exceeds the high alarm limit or falls below the low alarm limit, the device will indicate an alarm condition.
- Emissivity Adjustment: The devices allow for adjustment of emissivity (EMS) to ensure accurate readings for different materials. A default emissivity of 0.95 is often used, but it can be changed to match the surface characteristics of the target.
- Laser Targeting: A Class 2 laser is integrated for precise targeting of the measurement area. The laser can be turned on or off.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC):
- International: IEC 61326-1: Portable; CISPR 11: Group 1, Class A. Equipment is intentionally generated and/or uses conductively-coupled radio frequency energy that is necessary for the internal function of the equipment itself. Class A equipment is suitable for use in all establishments other than domestic and those directly connected to a low-voltage power supply network that supplies buildings used for domestic purposes. There may be potential difficulties in ensuring electromagnetic compatibility in other environments due to conducted and radiated disturbances. Caution: This equipment is not intended for use in residential environments and may not provide adequate protection to radio reception in such environments.
- USA (FCC): 47 CFR 15 subpart B. This product is considered an exempt device per clause 15.103.

Usage Features
The thermometers are designed for ease of use with a pistol-grip form factor.
- Power On/Off: The device powers on when the trigger is pressed and automatically turns off after 10 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery.
- Temperature Unit Selection: Users can switch between °F and °C display units.
- Emissivity Setting: The emissivity value can be adjusted using the "SET" button and up/down arrows to match the material being measured, ensuring accuracy.
- Max/Min/Diff Modes: These modes are accessible via the "SEL" button, allowing users to cycle through maximum, minimum, and differential temperature readings during a scan.
- Laser On/Off: The laser can be toggled on or off for targeting purposes.
- Alarm Setting: High and low temperature alarms can be set, providing visual cues when temperatures fall outside a specified range.
- Distance-to-Spot Ratio (D:S):
- MT4 MAX/MT4 MAX IND: D:S = 8:1. This means that at a distance of 12 inches, the measurement spot size is 1.6 inches.
- MT4 MAX+/59E+: D:S = 10:1. At a distance of 12 inches, the measurement spot size is 1.5 inches.
Understanding the D:S ratio is crucial for accurate measurements, as it defines the area from which the temperature is being averaged. The user should ensure the target is larger than the spot size to avoid inaccurate readings from surrounding areas.
- Measurement Best Practices: To obtain accurate readings, it is recommended to measure close to the target, ensure the target is larger than the spot size, and avoid measuring through reflective surfaces like glass.
Maintenance Features
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of the device.
- Battery Replacement: The device is powered by one AA IEC LR06 battery. To change the battery, open the battery compartment and replace the battery as shown in Figure 16 of the manual. It is important to remove batteries if the Product is not used for an extended period or stored in temperatures above 50 °C to prevent battery leakage. Battery leakage can cause damage to the Product.
- Cleaning the Product: The product case can be cleaned with soap and water on a damp sponge or soft cloth. The lens should be cleaned with a moist cotton swab.
- Product Disposal: Dispose of the Product in a professional and environmentally sound manner. This includes deleting personal data before disposal and removing batteries. The product has an integral battery and should be disposed of in the electrical waste. The device complies with the WEEE Directive and its marking requirements, indicating it should not be disposed of as unsorted municipal waste. Information about take-back and recycling programs is available on the Fluke website.
- Safety Checks: Regularly examine the case for cracks or missing plastic and carefully look at the insulation around the terminals. Do not use the Product if it operates incorrectly or if there are any signs of damage.
- Storage: Store the device within the specified storage temperature range (-20 °C to 60 °C) and storage altitude (12,000 m).
