These Operating Instructionsdescribe all the
models and standard and optional equipment
of your vehicle that were available at the time
of going to print.Country-specific deviations
are possible. Bear in mind that your vehicle
may not be equipped with all the functions
described. This also applies to safety-relevant
systemsand functions.

Preparing for ajourney
Visualand function check on the vehi-
cle exterior
Beforedrivingoff, the following checks should
be made on the vehicle:

Lighting system: apply the parkingbrake.
X
Insert the key intothe ignition lock.
X
Press the Ä switch.
The indicator lamp in the Ä switchlights
up and the lamp checkisactive. The parking
lamps, perimeter lamps, identification
lamps, side marker lamps, licenseplate
lamps and rear lamps light up and remain lit.
The low beam headlamps, high beam head-
lamps, turn signal lamps, reversing lamps,
brake lights, and work lamps are switched
on and off successively. This cycle is repea-
ted 30 times.

Press the Ä switchagain.

Release the parkingbrake.
The indicator lamp in the Ä switchgoes
out and the lamp checkisfinished.

Replace faulty bulbs (Y page 51).
X
Make sure that the licenseplate, vehicle
lighting, turn signal and brake lamps are not
dirty or damaged.
X
Contour markings: checkthe condition of
the contour markings at all attachments and
bodies.
X
Wheels and tires: checkthe tire pressures
and that the tires and wheels are secure and
in good condition.
X
Check the tires for sufficient tread depth.
When doing so, observethe country-specific
regulationsregardingminimum tire tread
depth.

Check the tires and wheels for visible dam-
age and tears.
X
Loading and stowing: make sure that the
vehicle is loaded correctly.
X
Make sure that the side gates and exterior
flaps are locked securely and not damaged.
X
Snow and ice: in wintryconditions, remove
accumulations of snow and ice from the
vehicle (Y page 153).
Have all faults and damage rectified. If neces-
sary, have the causes determined and rectified
at aqualified specialist workshop.
