Important safety notes

WARNING
If objects, luggage or loadsare not secured
or not secured sufficiently,they could slip,
tip overorbeflung around and therebyhit
vehicleoccupants. There is ariskofinjury,
particularly in the event of sudden braking
or asuddenchange in direction.
Alwaysstoreobjects so thatthey cannotbe
flung around.Secure objects, luggage or
loadsagainst slipping or tipping before the
journey.

WARNING
Objects in the driver's footwell mayrestrict
the clearance around the pedals or block a
depressedpedal. Thisjeopardizesthe oper-
ating and roadsafety of the vehicle. There is
ariskofanaccident.
Stow allobjects securelyinthe vehicleso
thatthey do not get into the driver's foot-
well.Whenusing floormats or carpets, make
sure thatthey are properly secured so that
they do not slip or obstruct the pedals.Do
not place severalfloormats or carpets on
top of one another.

If youdistribute the load unevenlyinthe
vehicle, the handling as well as the steering
and braking characteristicsare severely
affected. There is ariskofanaccident.
Distribute the load evenly in the vehicle.
Secure the load to prevent it from slipping.
The vehicle's driving,braking and steering
characteristicsvarywiththe type, weight and
centerofgravity of the load.

Close alldoors.

Make sure thatthe floormats and carpets
are properly secured so thatthey cannot
slip and obstruct the pedals.
Starting the engine

DANGER
Combustionengines emitpoisonous
exhaustgases such as carbonmonoxide.
Breathing in theseexhaustgases is hazard-
oustohealth and results in poisoning. There
is ariskoffatalinjuries. Never leave the
engine and,ifequipped, the auxiliary heating
running in an enclosedspace withoutsuffi-
cient ventilation.

Whenthe engine oilpressure is too low,
the on-board computerdisplaysthe 5
symbolinthe red event window. An accous-
tic warning also sounds.
The operating safety of the engine is jeopar-
dized.Switch off the engine immediately.
Observethe informationand instructions on
thisevent windowinthe "On-board computer
and displays" section (Y page 99).

Depressthe brake pedalorapply the park-
ing brake.
X
Turn the key to the drive positioninthe igni-
tionlock.
The display check for the instrument cluster
starts. The display check in the instrument
cluster allows youtosee what equipment is
present and whetherthereare any faults
with theirfunctions.
The immobilizerisdeactivatedand the
engine can be started.Ifyou useaninvalid
key,the on-board computerwillshowan
event window. Use avalid spare key.

Check the engine oillevel (Y page 80).

Shift into neutral.
X
Deactivate the loading tailgate;see the sep-
arate Operating Instructions.
X
Vehicles with engine preheating:atoutside
temperaturesbelow Ò4‡(Ò20 †) preheat
the engine before starting (Y page 63).

Turn the key to the start positioninthe igni-
tionlock. Do not depress the accelerator
pedalwhilst doing so.
X
If the engine starts normally, release the
key.
The idling speed is controlled automatically.

The engine idling speed is raised at very
lowoutsidetemperaturesorduring regener-
ation of the dieselparticlefilter.
