computerifthe brake system is malfunction-
ing.Inaddition, an indicator lamp lights up in
the instrument cluster or the status area of the
on-board computerand awarning tone may
sound. Braking behaviour maychange.The
pedaltravel and pedalforcerequired to brake
the vehiclemay increase. Havethe brake sys-
tem checked and repaired by aqualified spe-
cialist workshop.
The vehicleisequippedwiththe electronic
braking system (EBS) when it leaves the fac-
tory and includes the following functions:

ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)
R
ASR (accelerationskidcontrol)
R
ALB (automatic load-dependent brake)
R
Hillholder
R
BAS (Brake Assist System)
The electronic controlisabletorelieve the
load on the service brake by activating the
continuous brake, depending on the vehicle
load and the weather conditions.
On vehicles with disc brakes on allaxles, the
electronic controlsystem monitors the tem-
perature of the disc brakes.
If the electronic controldetects malfunctions,
acorresponding event windowappears in the
on-board computer.
If youbrake hard (emergency braking)from a
speed greaterthanapproximately30mph
(50 km/h)the hazard warning lamps are
switched on automatically. The hazard warning
lamps flash at ahigherfrequency.
The hazard warning lamps areswitched off
automaticallyif:

emergency braking is interruptedor
R
the vehiclecomestoastandstill afterthe
emergency braking and then pullsaway
again

If the vehiclecomestoastandstill after
emergency braking,the hazard warning
lamps continue to flash at the normalfre-
quency.
Checkingthe compressed-airsystem
forleaks

WARNING
It is not possibletobrake the vehicleifthe
compressed-airbrake system hasaleakor
if thereisinsufficient reservoirpressure.
There is ariskofanaccident.
Do not pull away untilthe required reservoir
pressures have been reached.
In the event of loss of pressure whiledriving,
immediatelybring the vehicletoahaltin
accordance with the traffic conditions.
Secure the vehicleusing the parking brake.
Havethe compressed-airsystem repaired at
aqualified specialist workshop.
Do not letanyone enterorexitthe vehicledur-
ing the test. Thisavoids youmistaking pres-
sure loss from the air-sprung seats or the level
controlsystem for aleak.

Stop the vehicleonalevel surface.

Apply the parking brake.
X
Use chocks to safeguard the vehicleagainst
rolling away.
X
Releasethe parking brake.
X
Turn the key to the drive positioninthe igni-
tionlock.

Call up the ReservepressureReservepressure menu win-
dowinthe on-board computerinthe ã
Monitoring info menu (Y page 80).

Leave the engine running untilthe system-
dependent reservoirpressure is shown
(Y page 205).

Switch off the engine.
X
Turn the key to the drive positioninthe igni-
tionlock.

Call up the ReservepressureReservepressure menu win-
dowinthe on-board computeragain.
If aclear pressure loss cannotbeidentified
in the menu windowofthe on-board com-
puter, then the compressed air-brake sys-
tem is freefrom leaks.
If asignificant loss of pressure is detected,
the compressed-airbrake system is leaking.

If the compressed-airbrake system is leak-
ing,haveitchecked and repaired by aquali-
fiedspecialist workshop.
