ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)
Generalnotes
ABScontrols thebraking pressuresothatthe
wheels do notlockunder braking.This means
that thevehiclecan still be steered while brak-
ing.
ABSisoperational from walking pace, regard-
less of road surfaceconditions. If theroad is
slippery, ABSintervenes evenifyou only brake
gently.

G
WARNING
If ABSismalfunctioning,the wheels could
lockwhen braking.The steerabilityand
braking characteristics would be severely
affected. There is an increased danger of
skiddingand accidents.
Drive on carefully. HaveABS checkedimme-
diately at aqualified specialistworkshop.
The anti-lockprotection function is notguaran-
teed if, after theignition is switched on:
R
no brakesystem display appearsinthe sta-
tus area of theon-board computer or
R
thedisplay does notgoout after 3seconds
or
R
thedisplay does notgoout when thevehicle
pulls away
X
Turn thekey to thedrive position in theigni-
tion lock.
The ! indicator lamp for ABSequipment
is shown in gray in thestatus area of theon-
boardcomputer for approximately
3seconds.
If theelectronic control detects ABSfaults, a
corresponding event window appearsinthe
on-board computer. Acoloured indicator lamp
for theaffectedABS equipmentalso lights up
in thestatus area of theon-board computer as
described above.
Braking with anti-lock protection
Anti-lock protection improves thedirectional
stabilityand steerabilityofthe vehicleunder
braking.
If you fail to adapt your drivingstyle or if you
are inattentive, thedrivingsafetysystems can
neither reduce theriskofanaccidentnor
override thelaws of physics.Drivingsafety
systems are merely aids designed to assist
driving. You are responsiblefor thedistanceto
thevehicleinfront,for vehiclespeed, braking
in goodtimeand remaining in lane. Always
adapt your drivingstyle to theprevailing road
and weather conditionsand maintainasuffi-
cient,safedistancefromother road users.
Drive carefully.
If ABSisdeactivated or if there is amalfunc-
tion in thevehicle's brakesystem, Active
Brake Assistisautomatically deactivated.
When ABSisintervening:
X
Continue to depress thebrakepedal until
thebraking situation is over.
When ABSisintervening,the continuous
brakeisswitched off.The à indicator
lamp in theinstrumentclusterremainson.
During afull brakeapplication:
X
Depress thebrakepedal withforce.
Parking brake
G
WARNING
If theparking brakelever is notinthe fully
appliedposition,itautomatically returnsto

away as aresult.There is ariskofanacci-
dent.
Movethe lever intothe fully appliedposition
when parking thevehicle.
G
WARNING
The parking brakemay notbesufficientto
ensurethatthe loadedvehicles does notroll
away on uphilland downhill gradients.There
is ariskofanaccident.
In thecheck position,check whether the
parking brakewill hold theloadedvehicle. If
thevehicleisnot held,secure it usingother
methods, e.g. wheelchocks.
