Shift ranges
Display : shows the selected shift range on
the left and the selected gear on the right, e.g.
D4.

Reverse gear
Only engage reverse gearwhenthe vehicle
is stationaryand the engine is at idling
speed.

Neutral position
Power transmission from the engine to the
drive axleisdisconnected. Whenyou
release the service brake and the parking
brake, the vehicle can be movedfreely.
Whenneutral position is selected,the status
areaofthe display in the on-board computer
shows the Ü symbol.

Drive position
The automatic transmission shifts allsix
forward gears automatically. The drive posi-
tion will provideoptimal driving characteris-
tics in almost alloperating circumstances.

Restrictorderestrictthe shift range
While driving,you can restrict or derestrict
the shift rangemanually for uphillordown-
hillgradients using the * and & but-
tons.
Drive programs
The automatic transmission offers the Econ-
omy and Power drive programs. The drive
programs support your desireddriving style.
The Economy standard drive programis
designedfor acomfortable,economic driving
styleand makesdriving on slippery roadsurfa-
ces easier.
The Power drive programisfor travelling at
higher engine speeds and for greater perform-
ance requirements. Only choose the Power
drive programwhennecessary, and then only
for ashort period.Otherwise, the fuelcon-
sumption is increased.
After starting the engine, the standard drive
program Economy is always active.
You can switch between the drive programs at
any time:

Whenthe Power drive programisselected,
display : also shows POWERPOWER.
Pulling away and stopping the vehi-
cle

Depress the brake pedal.

Press the 7 or C button.
X
Release the brake pedal and depress the
acceleratorpedal.

If the transmission oil temperature falls
below 23 ‡(−5 †) the automatic transmis-
sionhas cooled down. The transmission
electronics then only engage the reverse
gearorsecond forward gear. If the trans-
missionoil temperature exceeds 23
(−5 †) the transmission electronics will
shift to allgears once again.
Stopping
!
Only letthe vehicle coast brieflyinneutral
position. Extended coasting of the wheels
results in transmission damage, e.g. when
towing away.
If the continuousbrake (engine brake/
retarder) is activated, the engine speed for
downshifting is higher than whenthe contin-
uous brake is deactivated.
Whenstopping briefly, e.g. at trafficlights:

Maintain the gearposition and stop the
vehicle with the service brake.
Whenstopping for alonger period with the
engine running:
X
Shiftthe transmission to neutral position.
