You are responsible for keepingasafe dis-
tance to the vehicle in front, for the vehicle
speed, braking in good timeand remaining in
lane. You should always adapt your driving
style to suit prevailingroad and weather condi-
tions.
Brakethe vehicle using the service brakeif:

ared eventwindow with the · symbol
appears in the on-board computer
R
an intermittentwarningtonesounds
R
an intermittentwarningtonesounds and
automatic partial braking was initiated
The followingmay not be detected by Active
BrakeAssist:
R
narrow vehicles, e.g. motorcycles
R
vehicles drivingonadifferentline
Read the safetynotes on drivingconditions
that may lead to systemrestrictions
(Y page 131).
Vehicles with ActiveBrakeAssist 4: the sys-
tem may not react correctly:
R
to stationarypeople
R
to people or vehicles movingquickly within
the detection rangeofthe sensors
R
to people in atunnel
ActiveBrakeAssist may unexpectedly issue
warnings or brakeyour vehicle:
R
in car washes
R
to stationaryobstacles inside atunnel
R
on ferries
R
in loading areas
R
at tollgates
R
in workshops
If no visual and/or acoustic warningisissued
in acritical situation:
R
ActiveBrakeAssist has not recognised the
danger of the situation
R
ActiveBrakeAssist is deactivated
R
ActiveBrakeAssist has failed
If avisual and/or acoustic warningisissued or
apartial braking manoeuvre is performed in a
non-critical situation:
R
suppressActiveBrakeAssist or
R
press the l button to deactivate Active
BrakeAssist
You can suppressordeactivate ActiveBrake
Assist if you:
R
use aturn signal
R
depressthe accelerator pedal
R
press the l button

Vehicles with ActiveBrakeAssist 4: inter-
ventionsofthe systemtriggered by the
driver cannot be suppressed by switching on
the turn signal.
You can cancel an emergencybraking
manoeuvre triggered by ActiveBrakeAssist, if
you:
R
depressthe accelerator pedal beyond the
pressure point (kickdown)
R
press the l button
Clean the cover of the ActiveBrakeAssist dis-
tance sensor regularly (Y page 157).
If the distance sensor cover is dirtyoricy, its
functionality may be impaired.
Do not mountany attachmentsinfrontofthe
distance sensor, e.g. acrashguard, and do not
paint or affix itemstothe sensor cover. Other-
wise, the operation of the distance sensor and
the operation of ActiveBrakeAssist may be
affected.
Activating and deactivating Active Brake
Assist
When you startthe engine, ActiveBrakeAssist
is automatically activated.
ActiveBrakeAssist is deactivatedautomati-
cally if:
R
there is amalfunction
R
ABSisdeactivatedorthere is amalfunction
in the brakesystemofthe vehicle
