Active Brake Assist
Active Brake Assist
General notes
The term Active Brake Assist,used in the fol-
lowing sections, also applies to Active Brake
Assist 3and Active Brake Assist 4.
Active Brake Assist assists you:
R
in ideally avoiding acollision with the vehi-
cle in front
R
in minimising the danger of acollision with
the vehicle in frontorastationary obstacle
in the path of your vehicle
R
in reducing the consequences of acollision
with the vehicle in front
If Active Brake Assist detectsthe risk of acol-
lision with the vehicle in front, it issues an
audible and visual warning. If you do not react
and the risk persists, Active Brake Assist auto-
matically initiates partial braking of the vehi-
cle. If you do not react to the partial brake
application, Active Brake Assist automatically
initiates an emergencybraking manoeuvre.
Within the system boundaries, Active Brake
Assist 3and Active Brake Assist 4can:
R
react earlier to an obstacle in the path of
your vehicle
R
perform an emergencybraking manoeuvre
at higher speeds as afull brake application
to bring the vehicle to astandstill
Within the system boundaries, Active Brake
Assist 4can also:
R
react to moving people with awarning and
partial brake application
Important safety notes

WARNING
Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic func-
tion will initially brake your vehicle by apar-
tial application of the brakes if adanger of
collision is detected. There may be acolli-
sion unless you brake yourself. Even after
subsequent full application of the brakes a
collision cannot alwaysbeavoided, particu-
larly when approaching at too high aspeed.
There is arisk of an accident.
Always apply the brakes yourself and try to
take evasive action,provided it is safe to do
so.

WARNING
Active Brake Assist cannot alwaysrecognise
other road users and complex traffic condi-
tions.
In such cases, Active Brake Assist may:
R
give an unnecessary warning and then
brake the vehicle
R
neither give awarning nor intervene
There is arisk of an accident.
Continue to drive carefully and be prepared
to brake, particularly if Active Brake Assist
warns you.

WARNING
Active Brake Assist does not react to:
R
people or animals
R
oncoming vehicles
As aresult, Active Brake Assist might not
warn you or intervene in these situations.
There is arisk of an accident.
Always pay careful attention to the traffic
situation and be ready to brake.

Active Brake Assist 4also reacts to people
moving on the roadside.
If you fail to adapt your driving style or if you
are inattentive, Active Brake Assist can neither
reduce the risk of an accident nor override the
laws of physics.
