with hot partsofthe exhaust system or
exhaust gas flow. Thereisarisk of fire.
Park thevehicle so that no flammable mate-
rials comeintocontactwith partsofthe
vehicle which are hot.Take particular care
not to park on dry grassland or harvested
grain fields.
!
During automatic and manual regenera-
tion, extremely hot exhaust gases escape
fromthe exhaust pipe. Maintain adistance
of at least one meter to other objects, e.g.
parked vehicles, in ordertoavoid damage to
property.
For vehicles with alower exhaust pipe and
level control, ensure that thevehicle is not
parked with aloweredchassis. Too little
clearancemay otherwise lead to damage to
thefloorcovering.
If you drivethe vehicle predominantly over
shortdistances or with low loads, automatic
regeneration may not be sufficient.
If too manyparticles collect in thediesel parti-
cle filter, the  indicator lamp in theinstru-
mentcluster lightsup. The on-board computer
then instructsyou with ayellow eventwindow
to start manual regeneration (Y page 86).
Manual regeneration lastsapproximately
30 minutes up to amaximum of 60 minutes
(Y page 149).
If you do not observe theyellow eventwin-
dows and their instructions,you risk:

Automatic regeneration
When the É indicator lamp lightsupinthe
instrumentcluster, automatic regeneration of
thediesel particle filter is in progress.
An automatic regeneration can begin either
while thevehicle is in motion or stationary.
Automatic regeneration only beginswhen all
operatingconditions have been fulfilled, such
as sufficiently high engine oil and exhaust tem-
peratures, for example. If an operatingcondi-
tionisnolonger fulfilled while regeneration is
in process, the É indicator lamp goes out
and theregeneration is interrupted. When all
operatingconditions are fulfilled again, the
regeneration startsagain automatically. There-
fore, avoid interruptions in driving as long as
the É indicator lamp is lit.
i
The engine noiseand theengine idling
speed may change while regeneration is in
process.
Regeneration block
If you needtoavoid theincreasedemission
temperatures that occur duringregeneration,
you can disable regeneration,for example,
when you are:
R
enteringahazardous area
R
performing work which causes intense
build-up of dirt on thevehicle, involvingdry
or flammable materials
Automatic and manual regeneration can then
no longer be started and any current regenera-
tionwill be interrupted.
X
To activate/deactivate: pressthe lower
sectionofthe Ê button.
When theindicator lamp in the Ê button
lightsup, regeneration is blocked.
Only switch on theregeneration blockfor as
long as thehazardous condition prevails. If you
have switchedonthe regeneration block,
regeneration remains blocked even after start-
ing theengine again. This can result in alarge
number of particles quickly collecting in the
diesel particle filter. In this case, the on-board
computerinformsyou that theregeneration
blockisstill active by meansofthe Â
