Maintenance
The fuel consumption and assembly wear
depend on regular maintenance. Regularmain-
tenance of the vehicleincreases road safety
and lowers fuel consumption. Keep to the
maintenance intervals. Always have mainte-
nance work carriedout at aqualified specialist
workshop.
Fueltype
The fuel gradealsoaffects fuel consumption.
Use of lower fuel grades and/or non-approved
fuel additives willincreasefuel consumption.
Ensure that you refuelwith the appropriate
fuel grade(Ypage202).
Driving resistance
General notes
The principle forms of driving resistance are
incline, rolling and aerodynamic resistance.
Driving resistance changes depending on, for
example, vehicleweight and vehiclespeed.
Remember that driving resistance increases
with vehiclespeed.
Rolling resistance
Rolling resistance and therefore fuel consump-
tion are affected by the following factors:
R
tire size and tire type
R
tire pressure, e.g. correctly set tire pressure
reduces fuel consumption
Check the tire pressure at regular intervals
(Y page195)
R
tire type, e.g. summerorwinter tires, single
or twin tires
R
tire tread and tire width, e.g. coarse tire
treads such as those on winter tires
increasefuel consumption
R
loaddistribution, e.g. even loaddistribution
increases not only driving safety, but also
tire life
Observe the notes on the permissible wheel
and axle loads (Y page116) and the data on
the vehicleidentificationplate
(Y page197).
R
road and weather conditions, e.g. wet or
soft road surfaces (snow or rain) increase
fuel consumption
Aerodynamics
Air turbulence increases aerodynamic resist-
ance and therefore fuel consumption. Air tur-
bulence occurs in particularatadditionally
installed equipment, e.g. auxiliary headlamps.
R
With open loads, arrange the loadsothat
there are no gaps. Coverthe loadwith atar-
paulin.
R
Lash downall tarpaulins on the tractor/
trailer combination securely.
Fuel-saving driving styles
H
Environmental note
Only switch on the air-conditioning system
when necessary. Fuel consumption increa-
ses when the air-conditioning system is
switched on.
You can keep fuel consumption at low levels
with yourdriving style:
R
Do not depress the accelerator when start-
ing the engine.
R
Avoid frequent cold starts.
R
Do not warmupthe engine while stationary.
R
Switch off the engine when waiting in sta-
tionary traffic.
R
Avoid frequent and heavy acceleration.
R
Avoid adaptive braking by driving with fore-
sight.
R
Drive in an even and considered manner.
Use cruisecontrol (Y page122) and the dis-
tance control assistant driving systems
(Y page124).
R
Take care to keep to an economicalengine
speed(greenarea of the rev counter)
(Y page68).
R
Avoid speedpeaks.
R
Avoid frequent speedchanges,inparticular
at high speeds.
R
Avoid frequent gearchanges.
