Retightening the wheel nuts

WARNING
The wheelscould come loose if the wheel
bolts or wheel nuts are not tightened to the
prescribed tightening torque.There is arisk
of an accident.
Ensurethatthe wheel bolts or wheel nuts
are tightened to the prescribed tightening
torque.
If youare not sure, do not move the vehicle.
Contact aqualified specialist workshopand
have the tightening torque checkedimmedi-
ately.

Check wheel nuts regularlyfor tightness.
Retighten if necessary.Replace damaged
wheel nut covercapsand wheel nut covers.
Observe the wheel nut tightening torque.
Alwaysobserve the instructions and safety
notes on "Changing awheel in the event of a
flattire"(Ypage 177).
Observe the wheel nut tightening torques
(Y page 205).
Retighten the wheel nuts after30miles
(50 km).
Whenusing new or newly painted wheel rims,
check the tightening torque of the wheel nuts
againaftertraveling approximately620 to
3100 miles (1000to5000 km).

Retightenthe wheelnuts in acrosswisepat-
tern.
On light-alloywheels, the wheelnuts arenot
flush with the wheelbolts when tightened.
