Tirepressures
Important safety notes
G
WARNING
Underinflatedoroverinflated tires pose the
followingrisks:
R
thetires may burst, especially as theload
and vehicle speedincrease.
R
thetires may wear excessively and/or
unevenly, whichmay greatly impair tire
traction.
R
thedriving characteristics,aswell as
steering and braking,may be greatly
impaired.
Thereisarisk of an accident.
Follow recommended tireinflation pressures
and check thepressure of all thetires
includingthe sparewheel:
R
monthly, at least
R
if theload changes
R
before beginningalongjourney
R
underdifferentoperatingconditions, e.g.
off-road driving
If necessary, correctthe tirepressure.
G
WARNING
The tiretemperatureand pressure increase
when thevehicle is in motion.Ifyou reduce
thetirepressure in hot tires are warm, the
tirepressure will be toolow when thetires
are cold. Tire pressure that is toolow can
causethe tiretoburst, in particular if the
vehicle is heavily laden or at high speeds.
Thereisarisk of an accident.
Never reducethe tirepressure in hot tires.
Observethe prescribed tirepressures.
For every 18 ‡(10 †) changeinair
tempera-ture, thetirepressure changes by
around30
to 40 kPa(0.3 to 0.4 bar/4.4 to 5.8 psi). Bear
this temperature-related changeintire pres-
sureinmind whenchecking tire pressures
indoors, where the temperature may be higher
than the outsidetemperature.
Example:
R
room temperature is approximately 68
(20 †).
R
outsidetemperature is approximately 32
(0 †).
R
set the tire pressure to around 60 to 80 kPa
(0.6 to 0.8 bar/8.7 to 11.6 psi)above that
prescribed in the tire pressure table.
The tire pressures are specified according to
E.T.R.T.O. standardsand may deviate from the
manufacturer'sspecifications.
Also observe the general notes in the "Operat-
ing and roadsafety"section (Y page 192).
Determiningtirepressures
!
Correct thetirepressuresfor each axle on
thevehicle.
Example:tiresizeand load bearing index
X
Read off tiresize : and load bearing
index ; on thetire.
If load bearing index ; is comprised of two
numbers, the first number before the"/" is for
single tires and thesecondnumber, after the
"/", is for twin tires.
