Notes on engine oils
!
Use only engine oils with thespecified
grade.
Observethe safety notesonserviceproducts
(Y page 198).
The qualityofthe engine oil is decisivefor the
function and servicelife of an engine. After
extensive tests, Mercedes-Benzapproves
engine oils that correspondtothe current
technical standard.
Vehicles with adiesel engine: only use
engine oils whichcorrespondtoMercedes-
BenzSpecificationsfor ServiceProducts,
Sheet No. 228.61.
Engineoils according to Sheet No. 228.61
have ahigher qualitystandardand have a
favorable effect on:

R

You can findinformationonthe quality
grade, e.g.Sheet No. 228.61,and thevis-
cosity, e.g.SAE class5W-30, on theoil con-
tainer.
Engineoil according to Sheet No. 228.61 and
SAEclass5W-30 will be filledbefore delivery.
Scopeofuse
Multi-grade engine oils that comply with Sheet
No. 228.61 can be used all year round.
Dependingonfuel quality(sulfur content), oil
changeintervals must be shortened.
Oil change
!
If engine oils of differentgrades are mixed,
theengine oil changeintervals are short-
enedcompared with engine oils of thesame
quality.
Therefore, only mix engine oils of different
grades in exceptional circumstances. Set
thesheetnumber of theengine oil of the
lower gradeunder Engine oil gradeEngine oil grade in
order to avoid damagetothe engine.
!
If theSAE class(viscosity) of theengine oil
used is notsuitable for continually low out-
side temperatures below -4 ‡(-20 †) this
couldcauseengine damage.
The specified temperatures of theSAE class
always refer to freshlyadded oil. Engineoil
ages duringdriving due to soot and fuel resi-
due. This impairsthe characteristics of the
engine oil, particularly at low outside tem-
peratures.
If theoutside temperatureisunder-4‡
(-20†), Mercedes-Benzstrongly recom-
mends usingengine oils of SAEclass5W-30
or 0W-30.
Use only all-season oils.
Oil changeintervals are dependentonthe fol-
lowing:

Select theSAE classofthe engine oil in
accordancewith outside temperatures.
Information on theSAE classes and outside
temperatureranges can be foundinSheet
No. 224.2inthe Mercedes-BenzSpecifica-
tionfor ServiceProducts.
The maximum oil changeinterval can only be
achievedbyusingengine oils of particularly
high qualityinaccordancewith Sheet No.
