the same grade and SAE class as the oilfilled
at the last oilchange.
Check the oillevel in the on-board computer
(Y page 80) beforeyou addthe oil
(Y page 163).
Miscibility of engine oils
The benefits of high-quality engine oils are
diminishedifyou mixthem.
Engine oils aredifferentiatedaccording to:
R
engine oilbrand
R
quality grade (SheetNo.)
R
SAE viscosity class
If, in exceptionalcircumstances,the typeof
engine oilcurrentlyusedisnot available,
anotherengine oilapproved for Mercedes-
Benz maybeused.
Settingthe oilgrade
!
If the on-board computershows the 4
symboland yourefillwiththe quantity of oil
displayedinthe on-board computer, note
the following:
R
If yourefillwithanengine oilofalower
quality,set the lowerquality (Sheetno.) in
the on-board computer.
R
Do not setthe higherquality (Sheetno.)
in the on-board computerifyou addan
engine oilofahigherquality.
X
Set the Sheet No. (quality grade)ofthe
engine oilinthe on-board computer
(Y page 82).
Transmission oils
General notes
!
When changing the oil, if youreplace the
synthetic oilwithamineraltransmission oil,
youmay damage the assembly. Before the
oilchange,check whether the useofamin-
eraltransmission oilispermitted.Informa-
tionisavailable fromany Freightlinerservice
center.
Onlyuse:
R
transmission oils which comply with Sheet
No. 236.91for automatic transmissions,
seeon-board computer
At the factory,drive axles,transmission and
the PTOshaft gear arefilledwithahigh-quality
synthetic oil.
Transmission oilgrade
The quality grade (SheetNo.) of the transmis-
sion oilusedcan be checked and changedin
the on-board computer(Ypage 82).
Coolant
G
WARNING
If antifreeze comesinto contact with hot
components in the engine compartment, it
mayignite.Thereisariskoffireand injury.
Let the engine cooldownbeforeyou add
antifreeze.Makesurethatantifreeze is not
spillednext to the fillerneck. Thoroughly
clean the antifreeze fromcomponents
beforestartingthe engine.
Acoolant thatensures anti-corrosion/anti-
freeze protection and otherimportant protec-
tive effects is addedatthe factory.
Onlyuse coolants specifiedinSheet No.
235.5.
The coolant is amixtureofwater and corro-
sion inhibitor/antifreeze.
The corrosion inhibitor/antifreeze in the cool-
ant hasthe following properties:
R
heat transfer
R
anti-corrosionprotection
R
cavitationprotection (protectionagainst pit-
ting)
R
antifreeze protection
R
raising the boiling point
Leave the coolant/antifreeze in the engine
cooling systemall year round –evenincoun-
trieswithhighoutside temperatures.
Check the corrosion inhibitor/antifreeze con-
centration in the coolant every sixmonths.
Renew the coolant every 3years.
Onlyuse approved antifreeze/corrosioninhibi-
tor according to Sheet No. 235.5.This pre-
ventsdamagetothe engine cooling system
and engine.
When renewing the coolant, ensurethatitcon-
tains 50% antifreeze/corrosioninhibitorbyvol-
