Overview

This document is a Use & Care Manual for a Frigidaire dishwasher, providing comprehensive information on its function, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The Frigidaire dishwasher is designed to clean soiled dishes by spraying a mixture of hot water and detergent through spray arms. It operates on a Precision Direct Wash System, which uses energy-efficient motors for washing and draining. The cleaning process involves multiple water fills and drains, with water being pumped through the spray arms, and soil particles filtered out and drained. The dishwasher is equipped with various cycles and options to accommodate different soil levels and drying preferences, aiming for effective cleaning and improved drying performance.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Requirements: Operates on regular house current (120V, 60Hz). Requires a 15-ampere fuse or circuit breaker, or a 20-ampere fuse if connected with a food disposer.
  • Water Pressure: The hot water line must provide water pressure between 20 and 120 psi.
  • Water Temperature: Incoming hot water should be at least 120°F (49°C) for optimal dishwashing and drying results. The dishwasher can automatically heat water if the incoming temperature is insufficient, especially during the main wash and final rinse. The HIGH TEMP WASH option heats water to approximately 140°F (60°C).
  • Detergent Dispenser: Features one covered cup for the main wash and one uncovered cup for the pre-wash.
  • Rinse Aid Dispenser: Automatically releases a measured amount of rinse aid during the last rinse, with an adjustable setting for dispensing amount. Holds enough rinse aid for 35 to 140 washes.
  • Cycle Water Usage (approximate):
    • Heavy Wash: 9 gal. (34 L)
    • Normal Wash: 2.9 - 7.6 gal. (11 - 29 L)
    • 1 Hour Wash: 4.3 gal. (16 L)
  • Cycle Durations (approximate):
    • Heavy Wash: 2 - 3 Hours
    • Normal Wash: 1 ¼ - 2 ¾ Hours
    • 1 Hour Wash: 1 Hour

Usage Features:

  • Loading:
    • Top Rack: Designed for flexibility, accommodating cups, glasses, stemware, small plates, and bowls. Plastic items and delicate items should be loaded in the top rack. Long-handled knives and utensils can also be placed here. Items should be loaded with open ends facing down for better cleaning and draining. Some models may include a fold-down cup shelf or stemware holder for loading two levels of smaller items.
    • Bottom Rack: Best for plates, saucers, bowls, and cookware. Large items should be placed along the edge, and bowls/casseroles/saucepans with soiled surfaces should face down or toward the center, tilted slightly for drainage.
    • Silverware Basket: Can be loaded while in the bottom rack or removed to a counter. Sharp items (knives, skewers) should be loaded pointing down to prevent injury. Silver and stainless steel should not be mixed to avoid damaging the silver finish. Items should be mixed (some pointing up, some down) to avoid nesting.
  • Cycle Selections:
    • Heavy Wash: Recommended for heavily soiled loads like pots, pans, and casseroles. Automatically includes HIGH TEMP WASH.
    • Normal Wash: Recommended for lightly to heavily soiled loads.
    • 1 Hour Wash: Recommended for lightly soiled loads only.
  • Option Selections:
    • High Temp Wash: Heats water to approximately 140°F (60°C) for improved cleaning of grease and soil, and better drying.
    • Heat Dry: Enhances drying performance when used with rinse aid. Note that some items may not be completely dry.
    • Delay Start: Allows delaying the start of the dishwasher for 4 hours.
    • Child Lock Controls: Locks the controls to prevent accidental changes or starts.
  • Starting a Cycle: Requires loading dishes, adding detergent and rinse aid (if needed), closing the door, selecting the desired cycle and options, running hot water at the nearest faucet, and pressing the START/CANCEL pad.
  • Canceling a Cycle: Press and hold the START/CANCEL pad for 3 seconds. The dishwasher will perform a 90-second drain.
  • Adding a Dish: Unlatch the door, wait a few seconds for wash action to stop, add the item, wait a few more seconds for cold air to expand, close the door, and press START/CANCEL to resume.
  • Normal Operating Sounds: The dishwasher is designed to be quieter than older models. Sounds include water fills, drains, splashing water, and changes in sound as wash action switches between spray arms. Pauses during wash action switching are normal.

Maintenance Features:

  • Detergent Usage: Use only fresh, household-grade automatic dishwashing detergent. The amount depends on water hardness (measured in grains per gallon). Too little detergent can lead to poor cleaning; too much in soft water can cause etching.
  • Rinse Aid: Essential for improved drying, reduced water spots, and filming. The dispenser has an adjustable setting to control the amount dispensed. Refill when the indicator shows clear.
  • Glass Trap: Located in the center of the filter, it collects broken glass, straws, bones, and pits. To empty, rotate the handle 90° clockwise while pressing down on the wash arm, then lift the spray arm and glass trap assembly. The glass trap can be separated from the assembly for easier emptying. Ensure it is properly snapped back in place to avoid damage.
  • Outer Door: Clean with warm soapy water and a dishcloth or sponge, then rinse and dry. Avoid harsh cleaners.
  • Inside: The interior and filter are self-cleaning with normal use. Clean around the tub gasket area with a damp cloth if needed.
  • Overfill Protector: Located in the left front corner of the tub, it should move freely. Clean occasionally with household cleaner containing vinegar or bleach to dissolve buildup.
  • Drain Air Gap (if installed): Check and clean to ensure proper drainage. This is usually mounted on the countertop and is not part of the dishwasher itself.
  • Winterizing: If the dishwasher is in an unheated place, it must be protected from freezing. This involves disconnecting electrical power, shutting off water, draining water from the inlet valve and drain line, and then restoring service by reversing these steps and running a HEAVY WASH cycle.
  • Removing Spots and Film: For hard water deposits or film on dishes/glasses, run a NORMAL WASH cycle with clean dishes (no metal utensils) and no detergent. After the second water fill (approx. 10 minutes), unlatch the door, pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the bottom, close the door, and allow the cycle to finish.
