How to fix Furuno FAR-2318 Marine Radar when the picture is not updated or frozen?

If the picture on your Furuno Marine Radar is not updating or is frozen, it could be due to the Rotary Encoder inside the antenna unit, the SPU board inside the antenna, or a video freeze-up. Try checking the connection of signal cables, replacing the SPU board, or turning the radar off and then on again.

If your Furuno Marine Radar has poor sensitivity after tuning, it could be due to the second trace echo rejector being on or dirt on the radiator face. Try disabling the second trace echo rejector and cleaning the radiator face.

Why are range rings not displayed on my Furuno FAR-2318 Marine Radar?
V
veronicacampbellAug 30, 2025
If range rings are not displayed on your Furuno Marine Radar, one possibility is to adjust the brilliance of range rings on the BRILL menu to see if intensity is increased. If this is unsuccessful, consider replacing the associated circuit board or the MAIN board.

If range rings are not displayed on your Furuno Marine Radar, it may be because they are turned off. Try turning on the range rings with [RANGE RING] in the [NAVTOOL] menu. If they still do not appear, their brilliance may be too low; adjust their brilliance in the [BRILL] menu.

Why is my Furuno Marine Radar properly tuned but has poor sensitivity?
G
Gabriella RobersonAug 26, 2025
If your Furuno Marine Radar is properly tuned but has poor sensitivity, possible causes include a deteriorated magnetron, a detuned MIC, dirt on the radiator face, water ingress to the waveguide or other feeder line, or the second trace echo rejection being active. Consider the following:
1. Check magnetron current with the radar transmitting on 48 nm range. If the current is below normal, the magnetron may be defective and need replacement.
2. Check the MIC detecting current. If it is below the normal value, the MIC may have become detuned and needs tuning.
3. Clean the radiator surface.
4. Remove water from the feeder line.
5. Disable the second-trace echo rejector.

What to do if range changed but radar picture does not change on Furuno FAR-2318?
G
gwendolyn77Aug 25, 2025
If the range is changed but the radar picture does not change on your Furuno Marine Radar, it could be due to a defective range key or a video freeze-up. Try adjusting the range with the control unit or the [RANGE] box several times. If that does not work, try turning the power off and on again to see if the problem might be video freeze up. If still unsuccessful, the keypad may need replacement.
