Do you have a question about the Fyne Audio SUPERTRAX and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Fyne Audio SuperTrax is a super tweeter designed to enhance the audio experience by extending the high-frequency response of a loudspeaker system. It utilizes proprietary patent-pending SuperTrax™ technology, which radiates energy through 360 degrees, and features a new type of Thin Ply Carbon Diaphragm (TPCD). Proudly designed and constructed in Scotland, this device aims to provide many years of listening pleasure.

Function Description:

The SuperTrax super tweeter is designed to work in conjunction with existing loudspeakers, particularly those with Fyne Audio's IsoFlare™ point source drivers, but also offers significant performance gains with discrete speaker systems. Its primary function is to extend the high-frequency range of the audio system, capturing and reproducing ultrasonic energy that, while often considered beyond the range of human hearing, has been shown to be perceived through bone conduction and contributes to the overall realism and spaciousness of the soundfield.

Unlike conventional direct radiating super tweeters that "beam" energy directly at the listener, the SuperTrax employs an upwards-firing design with a contoured acoustic diffuser that uses a Tractrix profile. This design translates the plane acoustic wavefront generated by the dome into a spherical wavefront, resulting in an omnidirectional radiation pattern. This ensures that reflected energy in the room maintains the same harmonic structure as the direct on-axis energy, enhancing the perceived "air" and "space" in the sound.

The device aims to improve the preservation of harmonic relationships between instruments and transient performance across the entire frequency spectrum, not just at high frequencies. By moving the low-pass roll-off point higher, it reduces high-frequency phase error, leading to a more natural sound even at lower frequencies.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Recommended Amplifier Power: 400 Watt RMS
  • Sensitivity (2.83 Volt @ 1m): Suitable for loudspeakers up to 98dB typically
  • Nominal Impedance: 8 Ohm
  • Frequency Response (-6dB typical in room): 16kHz - 60kHz
  • Drive Unit Complement: 25mm (1") Thin Ply Carbon Diaphragm (TPCD) with neodymium magnet system
  • Crossover Type: 3rd order high pass 16kHz, Cryogenically treated
  • System Adjustments: +/- 3dB from nominal setting
  • Dimensions (HxWxD): 86 x 140 x 257mm (3.4 x 5.5 x 10.1")

The TPCD diaphragm is a key technological feature, engineered for extended high-frequency response without the uncontrolled break-up modes common in metal dome radiators. By optimizing thickness, stiffness, and damping across the diaphragm using COMSOL composite and acoustic simulations, it achieves a more linear and extended frequency response up to over 60kHz, free from high-level resonances.

Usage Features:

  • Placement: The super tweeter should be positioned on top of the main loudspeaker cabinet, set back from the front according to specific measurements provided in a table for various Fyne Audio models (e.g., Classic VIII: 50mm, F1-8: 45mm). This precise placement ensures time alignment with the acoustic point source of the main driver. For other brands of point source drivers, similar placement based on driver size is suggested, with experimentation recommended. For discrete speaker systems, positioning at the front of the cabinet is recommended.
  • Connection: The super tweeter connects to the terminal panel of the main loudspeaker, positive to positive and negative to negative. For bi-wired speakers, it should be connected to the HF terminals. An optional earth cable can be used to ground the super tweeter to the loudspeakers and then to the amplifier chassis or another earth point, which can improve detail and clarity by reducing radio frequency interference.
  • Cabling: A high-quality speaker cable is recommended. Thinner cables have been shown to work better at these high frequencies. If using the earth connection, a screened cable is advised for optimum results. Fyne Audio offers a specially developed cable that includes the earth connection.
  • Level Adjustment: The super tweeter includes a level adjustment with a +/- 3dB range. This control allows users to fine-tune the perceived "air" and "space" in the soundfield. It is advised to start with the control in the center position and experiment, aiming for a natural enhancement rather than drawing attention to the super tweeter itself. Using familiar, well-recorded program material is recommended for finding the optimal setting.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cabinet Care: The cabinet can be dusted with a lint-free cloth, such as muslin, which can be slightly moistened.
  • Precautions: As wood is a natural material, it is important to avoid exposing the cabinet to extremes of heat, humidity, or direct sunlight for extended periods.
  • Cleaning Agents: Under no circumstances should solvents or abrasive materials be used, as these will cause damage and invalidate the warranty.
  • Protective Feet: ALWAYS ensure the protective feet are in place on the super tweeter before positioning it on loudspeakers to prevent damage. Spare self-adhesive feet are included in the accessories bag.

Warranty Information:

  • Registration: Products should be registered online at www.fyneaudio.com.
  • Passive Loudspeakers: Guaranteed for 7 years from the date of purchase from an authorized dealer. This warranty applies only to the original registered owner, is non-transferable, and covers genuine Fyne Audio Limited products with the original undamaged serial number and proof of purchase, subject to the absence of misuse, overload, or accidental damage.
  • Active/Electronic Components: Guaranteed for 2 years from the date of purchase from an authorized dealer, subject to the absence of misuse, overload, or accidental damage.
  • Repair/Replacement: If the equipment proves defective during the warranty period due to manufacturing defect (excluding accident, misuse, neglect, unauthorized modification, incorrect installation/connection, improper equipment, or fair wear and tear), Fyne Audio will repair or replace it without charge for labor, parts, or return carriage.
  • Support: For problems, contact the Fyne Audio Limited dealer first, then the local distributor, or Fyne Audio Limited Customer Services if the distributor cannot be located.
  • Shipping: Do not ship any product to Fyne Audio Limited without prior authorization.
  • Liability: Fyne Audio Limited and its Authorized Distributors are not liable for any loss, damages, or malfunction caused by connected products, or for direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, punitive, or other damages related to the installation, delivery, use, service, repair, replacement, and/or maintenance of the product, except for personal injuries or death.
