Overview

The AF-60 LP™ Micro Drive is a frequency converter designed for controlling three-phase asynchronous motors. It serves as a versatile solution for various industrial and commercial electrical distribution applications, offering both installation and set-up quick guides for user convenience.

Function Description:

The primary function of the AF-60 LP™ Micro Drive is to regulate the speed and torque of connected motors by adjusting the frequency and voltage of the power supplied to them. This allows for precise control over motor operation, leading to improved energy efficiency, reduced mechanical stress, and enhanced process control. The drive is capable of operating standard three-phase asynchronous motors and supports a range of power outputs depending on the unit size.

It incorporates several protective features to ensure safe and reliable operation. These include electronic thermal motor protection against overload, temperature monitoring of the heatsink to prevent overtemperature trips, and protection against short-circuits between motor terminals (U, V, W). The drive also monitors for missing motor phases, triggering trips or alarms as necessary. Furthermore, it safeguards against mains phase loss, intermediate circuit over/under voltage, and earth faults on motor terminals.

The drive can be controlled via its integrated keypad, control terminals, or serial communication (RS485 com-port) using the DCT-10 Drive Control Tool software. The keypad provides a user-friendly interface with a numeric display, navigation keys, and operation keys (Hand, Off/Reset, Auto) for local control and parameter programming.

Usage Features:

The AF-60 LP™ Micro Drive offers flexible usage options for various control scenarios.

  • Keypad Control: The keypad allows users to start/stop the motor, adjust parameters, and monitor operational data. The [Hand] key enables local control, where the potentiometer on the keypad can be used to set the local reference. The [Auto] key switches control to external sources like control terminals or serial communication. The [Off/Reset] key stops the motor and resets alarms.
  • Menu Navigation: The [MENU] key provides access to different menus:
    • Status: For readouts only, allowing users to monitor various operational parameters.
    • Quick Menu: Offers easy access to frequently used parameters for quick adjustments.
    • Main Menu: Provides comprehensive access to all parameters, organized into groups for detailed configuration.
  • Digital Inputs: The drive supports programmable digital inputs (terminals 18, 19, 27, 29, 33) for functions such as Start, Reverse, Reset, Jog, and Preset bit control. These inputs can be configured as PNP or NPN logic.
  • Analog Inputs: Two analog inputs (terminals 53, 60) are available for reference signals, configurable for voltage (0-10V) or current (0/4-20mA) modes.
  • Analog Output: One programmable analog output (terminal 42) provides a 0/4-20mA signal for external monitoring or control.
  • Relay Output: A programmable relay output (terminals 01-03) can be configured for various functions, such as indicating control ready, drive ready, drive running, or alarm conditions.
  • Serial Communication: The RS485 com-port (terminals 68, 69) allows for remote programming and control via a PC using the DCT-10 Drive Control Tool, facilitating integration into larger control systems.
  • Load Sharing and Brake: The drive supports load sharing by connecting terminals UDC- and UDC/BR+. For braking, terminals BR- and UDC/BR+ can be connected (not applicable for Unit Size M1). Optional brake resistors are available from GE.
  • EMC Compliance: To comply with EMC emission specifications, the use of shielded/armored motor cables is recommended, connected to both the decoupling plate and the motor metal. Keeping motor cables short helps reduce noise and leakage currents.

Maintenance Features:

The AF-60 LP™ Micro Drive is designed with maintenance considerations to ensure longevity and ease of service.

  • Disposal Instructions: Equipment containing electrical components must be disposed of separately from domestic waste, adhering to local and valid legislation for electrical and electronic waste.
  • Repair Work Procedures: Before commencing any repair work, specific safety steps must be followed:
    1. Disconnect the drive from mains and any external DC supply.
    2. Allow sufficient discharge time for the DC-link (4 minutes for M1, M2, M3 sizes; 15 minutes for M4, M5 sizes).
    3. Disconnect DC bus and brake terminals (if present).
    4. Remove the motor cable.
  • Side-by-Side Installation: For IP20 rated units, the drive can be mounted side-by-side, requiring 100 mm clearance above and below for cooling.
  • Terminal Access: Control cable terminals are located under a removable cover, secured by a screwdriver, for easy access during installation and maintenance.
  • Firmware Updates: The drive can be programmed from a PC via RS485, allowing for potential firmware updates or configuration changes using the DCT-10 Drive Control Tool.
  • Error Logging: The drive includes a fault log (parameter 15-30) that records error codes, aiding in troubleshooting and diagnostics.
  • Factory Settings Restore: The drive offers a function to restore factory settings (parameter 14-22), which can be useful for resetting configurations or troubleshooting.
  • Automatic Restart: The automatic restart time (parameter 14-21) can be configured, allowing the drive to automatically attempt to restart after a fault, depending on the reset mode (parameter 14-20).
  • Thermal Management: The drive's thermal protection and heatsink temperature monitoring contribute to its reliability by preventing damage from overheating. Proper cooling and adherence to ambient temperature guidelines are crucial for optimal performance and lifespan.
  • Derating Guidelines: The manual provides guidelines for derating the drive in high ambient temperatures, low air pressure (high altitudes), and during continuous operation at low motor speeds to prevent premature wear and ensure stable operation.
  • Optional Accessories: GE offers line filters for improved harmonics performance and brake resistors, which can be installed to enhance the drive's functionality and compliance.
