Additional Instructions and Guidelines

Guideline A: Check Markings vs. Test Results

Compare karat stamp with test results; suspect if different. Interpret low range results (below 10K).

Guideline B: Identifying Non-Gold

Pieces testing as NA are confirmed to be not gold.

Guideline C: Weight and Density Check

Consider metal weight; light items may be costume jewelry or plated, suspect if too light.

Guideline D: Color and Finish Analysis

Analyze yellow gold color; overly yellow or tarnished items may be fake or plated.

Guideline E: Clasp Type and Authenticity

Examine clasp type; spring rings may indicate costume jewelry, avoid testing clasp only.

Troubleshooting & Helpful Tips

Calibration and Pen Probe Cleaning

Always calibrate before use; recalibrate as needed. Periodically clean pen probe tip for consistent results.

Pen Probe Chemistry and Recalibration

Pen probe chemistry changes; clean tip and recalibrate periodically to maintain accuracy.

Pen Probe Issues and Replacement

If calibration fails, check pen probe for wear or dirt; replace if it causes erratic readings.

Regular Cleaning of Pen Probe and Plate

Wipe off filings from pen probe tip and testing plate to prevent contamination and ensure accurate results.

Testing Specific Metals and Scenarios

Filings and Metal Particles

File all metal before testing to expose base metal; clean file to avoid cross-contamination.

No LEDs Movement During Testing

Indicates pen probe is not fully plugged in or material is non-conductive.

Test Results Too High

Suggests out-of-calibration device or presence of silver, palladium, or rhodium.

Testing Tungsten, Stainless Steel, and Rhodium

File tungsten/stainless steel to test as NA. Rhodium may test as platinum or higher karat.

Testing Palladium

Pure palladium tests between 18K and 24K; palladium in white gold raises karat readings.

White Gold Considerations

White Gold with High Nickel/Silver

High nickel may test lower karat; high silver may test slightly higher karat.
