Overview

The GenInterlock SIE-P2 is a generator interlock kit designed for Siemens and Murray electrical panels, specifically those with 150-200 Amp main breakers. This device ensures the safe operation of a generator by preventing the main utility power and the generator power from being active simultaneously, thereby eliminating the risk of backfeeding the utility grid, which can be extremely dangerous for utility workers and equipment. The interlock mechanism is engineered to work with both Plug on Neutral and Non Plug on Neutral panels, accommodating a spacing of 7/8 to 1 1/4 inches between breakers.

Function Description

The primary function of the SIE-P2 interlock is to provide a mechanical lockout system that physically prevents both the main utility breaker and the generator breaker from being in the "ON" position at the same time. This is achieved through a sliding plate mechanism that moves horizontally. When the main breaker is in the "ON" position (typically to the right), the interlock plate slides to a position that blocks the generator breaker from being moved to "ON." Conversely, when the generator breaker is in the "ON" position (typically to the left), the interlock plate slides to block the main breaker from being moved to "ON." This design ensures that only one power source can be active at any given moment, adhering to essential safety standards for generator installations. The kit is specifically designed for 150 or 200 amp single-handle horizontal throw breakers, with the main breaker operating from right (on) to left (off), and the generator breaker installed in the top right side, occupying two positions.

Usage Features

The installation process for the SIE-P2 interlock involves several steps that ensure proper fit and function within the electrical panel. The first step requires disassembling the interlock kit and aligning the bottom plate with the main breaker cutout, as depicted in the provided images. Before any work begins, it is crucial to turn off the main breaker and remove the panel cover to ensure safety. The kit includes a 3/16 drill bit for marking and drilling holes on the panel cover, which are necessary for mounting the interlock components. After drilling, all burs must be removed from the cover to prevent interference and ensure a smooth operation.

The interlock assembly involves inserting screws from the rear of the cover, then installing the bottom plate, followed by the top plate (which is slotted). Retaining nuts and thread lock are used to secure these components, and it is essential to verify proper movement of the interlock mechanism at this stage. Once the interlock is securely mounted, a 2-pole generator breaker is installed on the top right side of the panel. A Generator Warning Sticker is then placed on the generator breaker to provide clear identification and safety information.

An additional safety feature involves using zip ties to create a loop around the top set of breakers in the panel. These zip ties are pulled tight around the breakers and trimmed as needed. A Warning label is then installed next to the release tab on the zip tie at the generator breaker, further emphasizing safety protocols.

After re-installing the panel cover, it is imperative to verify the proper operation of the interlock. This verification includes confirming that when the main breaker is ON, the generator breaker is OFF and CANNOT be turned on. Similarly, when the generator breaker is ON, the main breaker is OFF and CANNOT be turned on. This rigorous testing ensures that the mechanical lockout functions as intended. Finally, a Generator start-up procedure label is placed on the panel box, along with a CAUTION label on both the panel box and the electric meter pan, providing essential instructions and warnings for users.

Maintenance Features

The GenInterlock SIE-P2 is designed for minimal maintenance, primarily focusing on ensuring its continued proper function and adherence to safety guidelines. The most critical aspect of maintenance is the initial verification of proper operation after installation. This involves regularly checking that the interlock mechanism moves freely and effectively prevents both breakers from being in the "ON" position simultaneously.

The manual explicitly states that "Only qualified personnel should be working on the panel box" and "An amateur should NEVER open the panel box." This emphasizes the importance of professional handling for any installation, inspection, or potential maintenance tasks. All rules and regulations of the National Electric Code must be followed during installation and any subsequent checks.

A crucial warning is provided: "The MAIN and the GENERATOR breakers should NEVER be able to be turned on at the same time. If panel cover is removed the Generator breaker is NEVER to be turned on." This highlights a critical safety interlock that prevents the generator breaker from being energized if the panel cover is not in place, adding an extra layer of protection.

In the event that the interlock does not function properly, users are instructed to "DO NOT USE and contact us immediately at sales@GenInterlock.com for support and instructions." This proactive approach to addressing malfunctions is vital for maintaining safety. The manufacturer, GenInterlock.com, explicitly states that they are "NOT responsible for misuse or improper installation. All electrical equipment should be installed and maintained by qualified personnel. Any consequences arising from improper use is the responsibility of the user." This disclaimer underscores the user's responsibility to ensure professional installation and ongoing adherence to safety protocols. Regular visual inspections of the interlock mechanism for any signs of wear, damage, or obstruction are recommended to ensure its continued reliable operation. The use of thread lock during installation helps maintain the integrity of the assembly, reducing the likelihood of components loosening over time.
