Usage Features:

  • Power On/Off and Volume Adjustment: Rotate the VOLUME control clockwise past the 'click' to turn the radio on and adjust volume. Counter-clockwise past the 'click' turns the radio off.
  • Display Lighting: The LCD backlight activates automatically when a key is pressed and turns off after about 5 seconds.
  • Receiving Signals: In standby mode, the radio conserves battery. A GREEN LED and the receive icon (≫≫≫≫) appear on the display when a signal is received. If the signal is encoded with a matching CTCSS or DCS tone, the LED lights ORANGE, and the signal is heard.
  • Transmitting: Press and hold the PTT (Push-To-Talk) switch. The LED lights RED, and the transmit icon (≫) appears. Release PTT to receive.
  • Call Alarm Melody: Press the PTT twice quickly to send a Call Alarm melody, alerting other users on the same channel. The transmit icon (≫) and RED LED will appear for about 5 seconds. This can only be sent once per minute.
  • Channel Selection: Use the ▲ or ▼ keys to step up or down channels. Hold them to scroll quickly.
  • Squelch: Eliminates background noise when no signals are present. Briefly press the SQL key to open the squelch and check for channel activity. The LED will light GREEN, and the ▪◄∈ and ≫≫≫≫ icons will appear. Press SQL again to close. Squelch sensitivity can be adjusted in the Menu (1-5 or Auto).
  • Keypad Lock: Prevents accidental key presses. Press F then hold the 8 key until the radio beeps to activate. The 8 icon will appear. Repeat to deactivate.
  • Duplex Operation: Allows transmission on a different frequency than reception, enabling communication through repeater stations for increased range. Works on designated repeater channels (1-8 and 41-48). When enabled, the ▲ icon is displayed. Set via the Menu.
  • Scanning: Monitors a sequence of selected channels for incoming signals.
    • Selecting Channels for Scanning: Use ▲ or ▼ to select a channel, then hold the SCAN key until the radio beeps. The scan memory icon ( ) will be displayed. Repeat for more channels.
    • Removing Channels from Scan Group: Select the channel, then hold the SCAN key until the radio beeps. The scan memory icon ( ) will disappear.
    • Scanning Selected Channels: Briefly press the SCAN key. The scan icon ( ) will flash, and channel numbers will change. Use ▲ or ▼ to change scan direction.
    • Exiting Scan Mode: Briefly press SCAN again.
    • Scanning Features: Pauses on a received signal for 5 seconds of inactivity before resuming. Pressing PTT during a scan will jump to the working channel (the channel active when scan was initiated).
  • CTCSS & DCS (Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System & Digital Coded Squelch): Quieting systems that allow groups to share channels without disturbance. CTCSS uses 50 low-frequency tones, DCS uses 104 digital codes. When enabled, only signals with matching codes are heard. Set via the Menu. The S (for CTCSS) or S (for DCS) icon is displayed.
  • Silent Mode: Once a CTCSS or DCS code is selected, press and hold the SQL key for about 2 seconds on a channel to enable Silent Mode. The selected code number will be displayed. The channel remains silent unless a signal with the chosen tone/code is received. Repeat to disable.
  • Transmitter Power Selection: Set to High ('Hi') or Low ('Lo') via the Menu. 'Hi' or 'Lo' icon indicates the setting.
  • Voice Scrambler: Uses band inversion for scrambled communications, compatible with most other manufacturers' scramblers. Enable/disable via the Menu. The SCR icon is displayed when active. All channels are scrambled when enabled.
  • VOX Settings: Allows hands-free conversations. The microphone detects voice and transmits without pressing PTT. Set sensitivity (1-3) or disable ('oF') via the Menu. The VOX icon ( ) is visible when enabled.
  • Roger Beep Tone: A tone automatically transmitted when the PTT switch is released, signaling the end of transmission. Enable/disable ('on' or 'oF') via the Menu. The ROG icon is displayed when active.
  • Button Beep: Provides a confirmation beep when keys are pressed. Enable/disable ('on' or 'oF') via the Menu. The button beep icon ( ) is displayed when active.
  • Call Alarm Selection: Choose from 5 user-selectable melodies to alert other users. Preview melodies (1-5) or disable ('oF') via the Menu.
  • Dual Watch: Monitors two channels simultaneously.
    • Setting Dual Watch: Select the 'current' channel, then press and hold MENU until 'du' flashes. Use ▲ or ▼ to select the second 'Dual Watch' channel or 'oF' to disable. The * icon is displayed when active, and the LCD alternates between the two channels.
    • Dual Watch Operation: Pauses on a busy channel for 5 seconds after transmission ceases. Press PTT on a paused channel to talk on it. Press PTT when no signals are received to talk on the selected channel. Briefly press SCAN to stop Dual Watch.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Charging:
    • Initial Charge: New Li-Ion battery packs should be fully charged before first use.
    • Desktop Charger (BCD020 - TX685/TX6155): Plug the PS002 AC adapter into a 240V outlet and connect to the charger. The LED will flash Red, Green, Amber, then Off. Place the radio in the cradle; the LED will be RED while charging and GREEN when fully charged (approx. 4 hours).
    • Dual Desktop Charger (BCD021 - TX6155TP): Charges two battery packs sequentially (approx. 8 hours total). The front slot has priority. The left LED is RED for the front slot charging, and the right LED is AMBER for the rear slot on Stand-by. Once the front is GREEN, the right LED turns RED for the rear slot charging, then GREEN when complete.
    • Vehicle Charging: The desktop charger can be powered by the optional BCV007 vehicle accessory charger.
    • Low Battery Alert: The battery icon blinks, and an audio tone sounds when the battery is low.
  • Conserving Battery Power:
    • Standby Mode: The radio automatically enters 'Standby' when inactive, drawing less power.
    • Use CTCSS/DCS: Keeps the radio in Standby until a signal with the selected tone/code is received.
    • Avoid Scanning: Scanning draws more power than monitoring a single channel.
    • Use Low Transmit Power: Reduces transmitter power to 1 watt, effectively doubling talk time for short distances or close to repeaters.
