Overview

This document serves as an instruction manual for the P-60 / 60 Special popcorn popper, manufactured by Gold Medal Products Co. It covers models 1866, 1866XJ, 2085, 2086, 2656, and 2656KC, providing essential information for installation, operation, maintenance, and parts ordering.

Function Description:

The P-60 / 60 Special is a commercial popcorn popper designed for food service locations. Its primary function is to efficiently pop corn using a heated kettle and an agitator mechanism. The machine is equipped with various controls to manage the popping process, including switches for kettle heat, kettle motor, and lights/warmer. Some models feature an auto shut-off mechanism for safety and energy efficiency. The unit also includes a warming pan to keep popped corn at an optimal serving temperature.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models and Electrical Requirements:
    • Models 1866, 2086, 2085: 120V, 60Hz, 1220W
    • Models 2656, 2656KC: 120V, 60Hz, 1300W
    • Model 1866XJ: 100V, 50/60Hz, 1220W
  • Kettle Capacity: The popper is equipped with a 6 oz corn measuring cup, indicating a 6 oz corn charge per batch.
  • Kettle Heater: The kettle/heater for models 1866, 2085, 2086, 2656 is 780W (Part No. 56006). Specific models like 2656KC use an 850W Tubular Element (Part No. 46652), and 1866XJ uses an 850W 100V Tubular Element (Part No. 48739).
  • Thermostats: Kettles are equipped with thermostats for temperature control. Common thermostats include 525°F (Part No. 76702) and 450°F (Part No. 76089). Model 2656KC uses a 420°F Thermostat (Part No. 76707), and 1866XJ uses a 450°F Thermostat (Part No. 76089).
  • Kettle Drive Motor: The kettle drive motor is typically 90V (Part No. 47038) for most models, with a specific 90V motor (Part No. 47121) for the 1866XJ.
  • Warming Element: A 50W Strip Heat Element (Part No. 49440) is used for the bottom corn pan.
  • Flood Lamp: A 75 Watt Flood Lamp (Part No. 41671) is used for illumination and additional warming.
  • Auto Shut-Off PCB: Models 1866 and 2656 are equipped with an Auto Kettle Shut Off PCB (Part No. 55402).

Usage Features:

  • Controls: The machine features distinct switches for:
    • LIGHT AND WARMER SWITCH: Activates the heat to the bottom corn pan and the heat light.
    • KETTLE MOTOR SWITCH: Powers the motor for the kettle agitator.
    • KETTLE HEAT SWITCH: Supplies power to the thermostat-controlled kettle.
  • Popping Instructions:
    1. Turn on the Kettle Heat and Kettle Motor switches.
    2. Perform a test pop with 3 kernels of corn and 1 oz. (30 ml) of oil in the kettle.
    3. Once the test kernels pop, load the kettle with a 6 oz corn charge and 1.6 to 2.0 oz of oil, along with 1 teaspoon of Flavacol.
    4. After corn has popped, dump the kettle.
    5. Repeat the cycle, always popping 3-5 batches for optimal popcorn quality.
  • Auto Shut-Off (Models 1866 and 2656): If the kettle heat is on for fifteen minutes without popping activity, the auto shut-off mechanism will turn off the kettle heat element, and the kettle heat switch will flash. To resume popping, cycle the kettle heat switch off and then back on.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • The machine must be properly grounded to prevent electrical shock.
    • Do NOT immerse any part of the equipment in water.
    • Avoid excessive water during cleaning.
    • Keep the cord and plug off the ground and away from moisture.
    • Always unplug the equipment before cleaning or servicing.
    • Do NOT touch the kettle or any heated surface to avoid burns.
    • ALWAYS wear safety glasses when servicing.
    • Do NOT allow direct public contact with the equipment in food service locations; only trained personnel should operate it.
    • The machine is NOT to be operated by minors.
    • It is recommended to plug the machine directly into a wall outlet; extension cords are not recommended as they can reduce performance and pose a safety hazard.
    • Ensure the wall outlet can accept grounded plugs and has proper polarity. Do NOT use grounded to un-grounded receptacle adapters.

Maintenance Features:

  • Kettle Cleaning:
    1. After each series of popping, allow the kettle to cool and wipe the outside with a soft cloth to remove oil drippings.
    2. After daily operation, allow the kettle to cool until it is warm but not too hot to handle.
    3. Unplug the kettle and remove it from the machine.
    4. Wipe the inside of the kettle, kettle lid, crossbar, outside, and underneath with a cloth.
    5. Important: Do NOT place the kettle in water, as this will damage electrical components and void the warranty.
  • Cabinet Cleaning:
    • Wipe excess grease from the glass and the outside of the machine with a clean cloth.
    • Important: Never use glass or plastic cleaners containing ammonia, as it will crack the plastic.
  • General Maintenance:
    • The manual emphasizes that sections related to maintenance are intended ONLY for qualified service personnel familiar with electrical equipment, not for the operator.
    • Always unplug the machine before servicing.
    • Adequate eye protection must be used when servicing.
    • Do NOT immerse the kettle, warmer, or any other part of the equipment in water.
  • Ordering Spare Parts:
    • Identify the worn or broken part using illustrations and the parts list.
    • Include the part number, part name, and quantity when ordering.
    • Provide the model name and machine serial number (found on the nameplate).

  • Warranty: Gold Medal Products Co. offers a warranty against defects in workmanship and material under normal use and service. The warranty covers repairing or replacing parts, f.o.b. Cincinnati, Ohio. Except for "Perishable Parts," the warranty applies for two (2) years from the original sale date, provided recommended operating and maintenance procedures are followed. Parts warranty is two years, and labor is six months. The warranty is void if the equipment has been misused, neglected, damaged in transit, tampered with, or changed, or if components not supplied or approved by Gold Medal Products Co. are used. The warranty is effective only when electrical items are properly attached to city utility lines at proper voltages. The warranty is non-transferable without written consent. To honor the warranty, the original purchaser must first contact Gold Medal Products Co. Technical Service Department to discuss the equipment problem.
