SUBJECT: Crank Case Heater Kit for Inverter Split Systems
For reliability and longevity, inverter condensing units are designed to maintain compressor oil
at optimum conditions while the unit is in stand-by mode. This feature allows a small current
draw through the compressor windings to maintain proper oil temperature to provide
compressor protection in preparation for the next run cycle.
In some cases, homeowners may hear a high-pitched sound coming from the outdoor unit. This
is the result of current draw through the compressor windings and is not a defect with the
inverter unit. If you have a homeowner experiencing this condition and finds it objectionable, we
have developed a kit to install an external crankcase heater to maintain proper oil temperature
instead of utilizing the compressor windings on the inverter units.
This kit is not under the manufacturer’s warranty and must be purchased by contacting your
service parts CSR. The part number for the kit is INVCCHK01.
Note: Please review IO-7005 (attached) before proceeding with the installation. The “New
INVCCHK01 requires the use of the BTSDL01 (Bluetooth Shared Data Loader) in addition to
this kit to install the required shared data.

Overview

The INVCCHK01 External Crankcase Heater Kit is designed for use with Goodman and Amana inverter split systems to address a specific operational characteristic: a high-pitched sound that may emanate from the outdoor unit during standby mode. This sound is a result of the compressor windings drawing a small current to maintain optimal oil temperature, a feature intended to protect the compressor and prepare it for the next run cycle. While not a defect, this sound can be objectionable to homeowners. The kit provides an alternative method for maintaining compressor oil temperature, thereby eliminating the need for the compressor windings to draw current during standby and, consequently, the associated noise.

Function Description:

The primary function of the INVCCHK01 kit is to disable the internal crankcase heater function, which is typically enabled in the production shared data file of inverter units, and replace it with an external crankcase heater. This external heater is controlled by a temperature switch that cycles the heater ON and OFF based on the discharge temperature during operation. This ensures the compressor oil is adequately heated before startup, preventing potential damage and ensuring smooth operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Temperature Switch Operation: The temperature switch has a "cut-in" range of 98°-112°F (36.7°-44.4°C) and a "cut-out" range of 122°-150°F (50°-65.6°C).
    • When the ambient temperature is low enough, the temperature switch turns the crankcase heater ON.
    • As the compressor starts running, the discharge tube heats up. When it reaches 150°F (65.6°C), the temperature switch turns the crankcase heater OFF.
    • When the compressor stops running and the discharge tube temperature drops below 102°F (38.9°C), the temperature switch turns the crankcase heater back ON.
  • Crankcase Heater Power: The crankcase heater operates at 240V @ 40W.
  • Temperature Switch Current: The temperature switch handles 2.5A.
  • Compatibility: The kit is compatible with specific Goodman and Amana inverter split system models, including:
    • AVZC180241, AVZC180361, AVZC180481, AVZC180601, AVZC200241, AVZC200361, AVZC200481, AVZC200601
    • AVXC2000241, AVXC2000361, AVXC2000481, AVXC2000601
    • GVZC200241, GVZC200361, GVZC200481, GVZC200601
    • GVXC200241, GVXC200361, GVXC200481, GVXC200601
  • Required Tool: The BTSDL01 (Bluetooth Shared Data Loader) is required for installation to load the necessary shared data file.

Usage Features:

  • Noise Reduction: The primary benefit is the elimination of the high-pitched sound from the outdoor unit during standby, improving homeowner comfort.
  • Compressor Protection: Maintains optimal compressor oil temperature, ensuring compressor longevity and readiness for operation.
  • External Heater Control: The kit introduces an external, temperature-controlled crankcase heater, providing a dedicated solution for oil heating.
  • Shared Data Update: The installation process involves updating the unit's shared data file using the CoolCloud™ HVAC Bluetooth® Shared Data Loader (BTSDL01) and the CoolCloud™ app. This update disengages the compressor motor winding from running during standby.

Maintenance Features:

  • Installation Procedure: The kit requires a detailed installation procedure, including:
    • Disconnecting all power to the unit and verifying capacitor voltage.
    • Removing the PCB cover, top panel assembly, and compressor blanket.
    • Installing the crankcase heater around the compressor, with specific placement instructions based on tonnage (e.g., above weld plugs for 2T/3T, within 2.25" from the base pan for 4T/4.5T).
    • Installing the temperature switch on the horizontal discharge line, 3 inches from the compressor, ensuring it's within the sound jacket for insulation.
    • Routing and connecting wires for the crankcase heater, temperature switch, and ground wire adaptor to the terminal block.
    • Using electrical tape to insulate metal connections.
    • Reinstalling all covers and panels.
  • Shared Data Loading: A critical step involves loading a new shared data file onto the PCB board using the BTSDL01 and CoolCloud™ app. This process ensures the unit's software is updated to recognize and utilize the external crankcase heater.
    • The app guides the user through selecting the correct shared data file, either by scanning a 2D barcode on the unit or by manually entering the model number.
    • The shared data loading process may involve connecting the BTSDL01 to the PCB, powering on the unit for a specific duration, and confirming the successful update.
    • The manual emphasizes the importance of loading shared data if multiple parts are replaced simultaneously or if fault codes d0, d1, or d2 are reported.
  • Post-Installation Check: After installation, the outdoor unit must be turned on and allowed to cycle for 5 minutes. The BTSDL01 is then removed, and the PCB cover is reinstalled.

Important Notes:

  • The kit is not covered under the manufacturer's warranty and must be purchased separately.
  • Only trained personnel should install, adjust, service, or repair the equipment.
  • Proper routing of wires is crucial to prevent contact with hot discharge lines, which could cause melting.
  • The terminal block may need to be replaced with one that includes an adaptor to accommodate the new connections.
  • The CoolCloud™ HVAC Bluetooth® Shared Data Loader (BTSDL01) is essential for the software update required by the kit.
  • The device utilizes Bluetooth technology, and its operation complies with FCC rules.
