SECTION 1
1. GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 GENERAL
The RDR-1700A Radar System is a lightweight digital color radar system designed primarily for fixed
or rotary wing aircraft engaged in maritime patrol, surveillance, rescue missions, and precision terrain
mapping. The radar system also can provide weather avoidance, beacon transponder location, and
waypoint navigation display. An external color indicator must be connected to the system to display
radar and navigation video.
1.1.1 Basic System Functions
The system consists of seven flight-line replaceable units: receiver-transmitter, interface unit, antenna
drive, radar antenna, 6.4 inch LCD display, 15-inch LCD display, and a joystick. Refer to paragraph
1.2 for descriptions of this equipment.
1.1.1.1 Radar System Components
The antenna drive unit and array forms the radar RF energy into the beam for transmission and then
receives the reflected target energy. The drive unit also provides for the positioning of the antenna
beam in azimuth and for the stabilization of the antenna beam to compensate for aircraft maneuvers.
The receiver-transmitter (R-T) unit provides RF generation and modulation to provide the required
pulse width as well as RF return and detection of the target. The R-T unit also contains the necessary
circuitry to provide the control functions for the various modes of operation, such as weather, search,
and beacon.
The interface unit receives the detected video and provides the necessary data processing for range and
azimuth integration. The radar data, which is received from the R-T unit in a rho-theta format, is then
scan converted into X-Y coordinates and is stored in digital memory to be read out to the radar
indicator. The interface unit provides the primary radar interface between the radar control unit and the
rest of the radar system. The interface unit also provides the necessary interface between the radar
system and the other aircraft avionic systems.
The radar indicator provides the means of displaying either the radar and navigation data on the display
in a color format or external video in a monochrome format. The radar displays are capable of
accepting the video format that is sent by the interface unit, and the radar displays are capable of
sending softkey data to the interface unit in response to the menu displayed. The radar displays also
contain the radar system’s On/Off power switch. The 6.4-inch display has the joystick built into the
display, where as the 15 inch display has an external joystick that connects to the back of the display.
1.1.1.2 Radar System Basic Operation
All system controls are located on the display via softkey or on a dedicated radar control pane,
depending upon the installation configuration. The interface unit processes all data and uses digital
