PROBLEM
SYMPTOM
PROBABLE CAUSE
3.
Unstable
Reading
Conductivity reading
fluctuates excessively
Salinity Gradients in sample
- ensure sample is well mixed.
Sample is too hot or cold
- sample temperature must be stabilized to
bath temperature in heat exchanger
- sample temperature should not exceed 5°C
of bath temperature at full flow rate.
Sample flow rate too high.
Temperature Drift.
- check temperature control circuit, and bath
temperature.
Cell contamination - bubbles in cell arms
- check cell visually for contamination or
improper arm filling, remove if necessary
(see operating manual).
Ground path through sample exhaust.
- waste sample hose must not make contact
with external devices such as waste buckets,
water path must be broken.
Noisy Conductivity Circuit.
- check circuit boards for salt contamination
or defective components.
- external Radio Frequency (RF) or
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) sources
present (with 3V/M source, noise will
typically degrade to ±0.2% fullscale, or
display reading ±0.0500).
- poor grounding of the instrument to the
laboratory grounding system via the line
cord ground pin.
Frequency beat of conductivity circuit
chopper and/or meter clock with line
frequency.
- check frequencies in calibration procedure.
Cell polarizing
- see step 5.
