Programme Search (PTY)
A major benefit of RDS is it’s ability to
encode broadcasts with Programme Type
(PTY) codes that indicate the type of
material being broadcast. The following
list shows the abbreviation used to
indicate each PTY in the front panel
information display along with an
explanation of the PTY:
NEWS: News Broadcasts
AFFAIRS: Political and current events
INFO: General information, financial
and trading news, medical conference
and weather information
SPORT: Sporting Events
EDUCATE: Scholastic and industrial
education programmes
DRAMA: Plays and literature
performances
CULTURE: Cultural, religion and
community programmes
SCIENCE: Scientific and technical
programmes
VARIED: Entertainment
POP M: Popular Music
ROCK M: Rock Music
MOR M: Middle of the Road Music
LIGHT M: Light Classical Music
CLASSICS: Serious Classical Music
OTHER M: Other types of musical pro-
grammes. i.e. Jazz, Reggae, Rap, etc.
ALARM: Emergency Warnings
TRAFFIC: Traffic Information and
Road Conditions
The AVR41 allows you to scan for a
specific PTY by using the following steps:
1. Press (or hold pressed) the RDS
Seek button
u
34
until the desired
PTY category appears in the front panel
display, it will remain for 10 seconds. To
scan for any station broadcasting RDS
data press the button until RDS ONLY
appears in the display. You can return to
the beginning of the PTY loop at any
time by simply pressing the Tuning
mode button
˘
once.
2. Press Tuning
Ú
or
/
‹‹
i
and the tuner will scan through all FM
stations and only stop when it reaches a
station with a PTY code that matches the
desired type.
A PTY choice remains selected for any
RDS Seek under all conditions unless
another choice is made or RDS Seek is
turned off by pressing the Tuning Mode
button
˘
. Pressing the RDS Seek
button
34
u
briefly will indicate any
selected PTY for 10 seconds, pressing the
Tuning buttons
Ú i
will display the
selected PTY briefly as reminder and start
the PTY Seek afterwards.
If no station matching the selected PTY
choice was found after a complete search
of all FM stations the display will report
NONE and return to its former
indication.
If the unit is not in the RDS Seek mode
(small RDS flag is not on) when the
RDS Seek button
34
u
is pressed
once, the display will indicate ANY
STN to remind you that all stations will
be searched, even if they are not
transmitting RDS data.
When TRAFFIC is selected as the PTY
search criteria, the unit will seek all
stations transmitting traffic information,
even if they are not broadcasting that
data at the time the search is made.
Traffic is not displayed as a PTY when the
DISPLAY button is pressed as it is not a
true PTY, but part of the station's RDS
code.
RDS Display Options
The RDS system is capable of transmit-
ting a wide variety of information. In
normal RDS operation the display will
indicate the station name, call letters or
other program service (PS). Pressing the
Display button
¸k
enables you to
cycle through the various data types in
the following sequence:
1. The station’s frequency (this is not
RDS data.)
2. The Programme Type (PTY) as shown
on the above list.
3. A “text” message containing special
information from the broadcast station.
Note that this message scrolls across the
display to permit messages longer than
the eight positions in the display.
Depending on signal quality it may take
up to 30 seconds for the text message to
appear. During that time the word
TEXT will blink in the display until the
tuner receives the entire text message.
