TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
SYMPTOM CAUSE SOLUTION
Unit does not function when Main • No AC power • Make certain AC power cord is plugged into
Power Switch is pushed a live outlet
• Check to see whether outlet is switch-controlled
Display lights, but there’s no • Intermittent input connections • Make certain that all input and speaker connections
sound or picture are secure
• Mute is on • Press Mute Button
Volume Control is down Turn up Volume Control
• Desired source not selected • Press correct Source Selector
• Speakers deactivated • Press Speaker 1 or Speaker 2 Button
• Headphones are in use • Unplug headphones
• Jumper pins between Preamp Outputs • Replace jumper pins, or if external amplifier
and Main-Amp Inputs were removed is in use, make sure it is turned on
No sound from any speaker; Amplifier is in Protection mode • Check speaker-wire connections for shorts at receiver and
light around Power Switch is red due to possible short speaker ends
Amplifier is in Protection mode • Contact your local Harman Kardon service center
due to internal problems
Unit does not respond to Weak batteries in remote • Change remote batteries
remote commands • Remote sensor is obscured • Make certain front-panel sensor is visible to remote
or connect an optional remote sensor
Intermittent buzzing in tuner • Local interference • Move unit or antenna away from computers, fluorescent
lights, motors or other electrical appliances
Audio sources sound distorted • CD player or other audio device • Only plug a device into the Phono Inputs if it is a
incorrectly plugged into Phono Inputs turntable with a moving-magnet cartridge, or if it is a
turntable with a moving-coil cartridge with a phono preamp
Turntable not plugged into Phono Inputs • Do not use a turntable with any inputs other than the Phono
Inputs, unless it has a moving-magnet-type cartridge and
includes a phono preamp
No video image • Source device’s video output not • Connect the source’s composite video output to
connected to HK 3485 the correct video input on the HK 3485
Wrong source selected • Press the correct Source Selector on the HK 3485
Video Monitor Output not connected • Connect the HK 3485’s Video Monitor Output to a composite
to display video input on your television or video display
Wrong video input on video • Consult the manual for your television for instructions on
display selected selecting the correct video input
Audio-only source selected • It is not possible to view video while listening to the
Phono, Tape/CDR or CD sources
