Section 7: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
7.1 PERIODIC AND NORMAL EVERYDAY MAINTENANCE
Grates- Keep ash drawer emptied. Failure to do this will
causegratestowarp.
CAUTION! Beforecleaningthechimneyandsmokepipe,be
surethereisoutandtheinsideofthestoveiscool.
Avoid chimney res! On a regular schedule, check for
creosoteandsootbuildupinthechimney,itmustbekept
clean.Keep a professionalchimney sweep inmind if you
haveaccesstoone.
Steelbrushesarethesafestforcleaningmetalsurfaces.Salt
solutionsandsomechemicalsmaydamagemetalsurfaces.
Donotoverreyourstove.Donotburnanythingthatcombusts
inseconds.Excessiveuetemperaturesmayresultthereby
ignitingcreosote.
To clean the chimney,obtainastiffbrushwithanextendable
handleandinsertthebrushintothechimneyfromthetop.
Continue the brushing and sweeping downward until the
entirelengthofthechimneyiscleaned.
After cleaning the chimney,thedebriswillbeatthebottom
ofthechimneyattheclean-outdoor,sweepthedebrisout
intoametalcontainer.
Section 8: OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
8.1 STARTING A COAL FIRE
Takeabout eight sheets ofnewspaper,crumbletheminto
ballsandplaceontopofthegrates.Next,laynekindlingon
topofthepaper.Thiskindlingmustbedryandnolargerthan
3/4"indiameter.Layerthekindlinginacriss-crossfashionto
allowgoodairow.Openthedraftcontrolfullyandlightthe
paperjustinsidethedoor.Now,closetheloadingdoorand
allowthekindlingtocatchre.Afterafewminutes,openthe
loadingdooraninchortwoforafewsecondsbeforeopening
completely.Thismethodwillallowsmoketoclearawayfrom
thedooropeningbeforetheloadingdooriscompletelyopened.
Addsmall,compactpiecesofhardwoodwhenthekindlingis
burninghot.Keepthedraftcontrolsfullyopentoestablishahot
requickly.Theashdooralsomaybeopenedduringstart-up
toaccelaratetheintialburn,butmustbeclosedagainafter
arehasbeenestablishedtopreventoverringtheinsert.
Whenasubstantialbedofredwoodcoalsarebuilt-up,
startaddingcoal(peaornutispreferredtostovecoalfor
starting)insmallamountsatatime.Keepthedraftcontrol
open.
Continueaddingsmallamountsofcoaluntilthereisa
solidbedofburningcoal.Donotaddtoomuchatone
time.Allowsufcienttimebetweeneachsmallloading
(atleast5-10minutes),sothateachloadinghastimeto
ignitethoroughlybeforethenextloadisputin.Whena
substantialbedofburningcoalshasbeenestablished,
llthestovetothetopoftherebrick.Adeepbedofcoal
alwayswillburnmoresatisfactorilythanashallowbed.
Whenmostofthewoodisburnedandthecoalis
completelyignited(usually5-10minutesorlessafterlling
thestove),thedraftcontrolshouldbeturneddowntothe
properoperatinglevel.(If the ash door has been opened,
it must be closed to prevent overring, which can
cause dangerously high temperatures.)
8.2 LOADING
Coalshouldneverbeaddedunlessthereisareasonablyhot
re.Thecoalbedshouldbebrightandvigorous.
Ifthereisburninghotandthereisadeepbedofcoals,full
loadsofcoalcanbeaddedatanytime.However,ifthereis
notadeepbedofcoals,itisbesttoaddsmallamountsof
coalatrst.
