Ifyour masonry chimneyhas not beenused for sometime,
haveitinspectedbyaqualiedperson(buildinginspector,re
departmentpersonnel,etc.).Ifalistedorcertiedmanufactured
chimneyistobeused,makecertainitisinstalledinaccordance
withthemanufacturer'sinstructionsandalllocalandstatecodes.
(SeeFig.F&G,noteroofclearance.)
3.2 COMMON CHIMNEY PROBLEMS
Inordertohaveaproperoperatingsolidfuelheatingsystem,
thechimneymustbecapableofprovidingthedraftrequired.
Theminimumrequireddraftis.06inchesw.c.(watercolumn).
Thismustbemeasuredusingadraftgauge.
Ifthechimneycannotsupplythisconstantdraft,theunitwill
notoperateproperly.
Insomeinstallations,a barometric draftregulatormaybe
usedandproperlyadjustedtocompensateforexcessivedraft.
REASONS FOR INSUFFICIENT DRAFT READINGS:
A. Leaky Chimney - Air leaking in around a loose tting
clean-outdoor,uepipesnottightatthejoints,improper
plugopeningsordefectivemasonry.
B. Chimney Improper Height - Chimney does not extend
throughtheroofhighenoughtopromotesufcientdraftor
causesadowndraftingconditiontotakeplace.Chimney
shouldbe2feethigherthananything10feetaroundit!

C.ObstructionInTheChimney-Checkpriortousebyholding
amirrorinchimneyclean-outdoor.Thiswillgiveaview
ofthechimney.
D.Trees or Other Topographical Barriers - Impeding the
chimney'soperationorcausingadowndraftconditionto
exist.Thiscanalsobecausedbyadjacentbuildingsor
theroofofthesamestructurewherethechimneyisnot
highenough.(SeeFig.H.)
NOTE: THE CHIMNEY ON THE HOUSE ILLUSTRATED IS
TOO LOW. IT SHOULD BE RAISED TO COMPENSATE
FOR DRAFTS.
E. ChimneySize-Chimneyisnotproperlysizedtoadequately
venttheappliance.Itiseithertoosmallortoolarge.
F. ChimneyOffsets-Chimneyswithoffsetsshouldnotbe
used.Theycausean
obstruction to draft
aswellasaplacefor
debristocollect.
3.1 TYPES OF CHIMNEYS
Thechimneyisoneofthemostimportant,yetmostneglected
andmisunderstoodportionofanysolidfuelburninginstallation.
Wedonotrecommendthatthestovebeconnectedtoachimney
sharedbyotherheatingdevices.
THE STOVE MUST BE CONNECTED TO ITS OWN TILE-
LINED FLUE. A MINIMUM FLUE SIZE OF 8" X 8" IS
NECESSARY FOR PROPER OPERATION AND APPROVED
FOR ALL FUELS.
NO OTHER APPLIANCES SHOULD BE VENTED TO THIS
FLUE!
CAUTION: THE CHIMNEY MUST BE A CLASS 'A' CHIMNEY
IN GOOD OPERATIONAL CONDITION.
NOTE; THE USE OF ALUMINUM TYPE 'B' GAS VENT
FOR SOLID FUELS IS UNSAFE AND PROHIBITED BY
THE NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION CODE.

B. InsulatedClass"A"manufacturedchimney,listedorcertied
byanationaltestagency.
C. TripleWallMetalClass"A"chimney,listedorcertiedbya
nationaltestagency.
