8.7 SAFETY
Whenever a loading door is opened, it should always be
cracked slightly to allow oxygen to enter and burn any
combustiongasesthatarepresentbeforefullyopening.Failure
to do this could result in sudden ignition of the unburned
gaseswhenthedoorisopened.
Astoveshouldneverbelledwithexcesscoalsothatthe
uegasexitisblockedorimpededinanyway.Burningcoal
generatescarbonmonoxide. If the ue gas exit is blocked,
the carbon monoxide can be forced out of the stove into
the room, with possibly fatal consequences.
NOTE: A STOVE SHOULD NEVER BE LEFT UNATTENDED
WITH THE ASH DOOR OPEN.
WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE START-UP PERIOD, THE
ASH PAN DOOR SHOULD NEVER BE LEFT OPEN.
Serious damage to the stove can occur from overheating.
Coalstovesshouldnotbeinstalledinanychimneythathas
hadahistoryofback-draftingorowreversal.Theseconditions
can cause improper draft, resulting in carbon monoxide
enteringthehouseratherthanbeingdrawnupthechimney.
REMEMBER! COAL GASES ARE TOXIC!
Sulfurdioxide,sulfurtrioxideandotherionsreleasedfrom
coalburningmaycorrodestainlessandmasonrychimneys,
andeven terra cottachimney liners. Coalwith high sulfur
contentwilldestroychimneysespeciallyfastifsootsitsin
theueforextendedlengthsoftime.Itisimportanttoclean
chimneysregularly.
