• With ARQ enabled, the modulation and therefore data rate
are determined on each transmission burst.
– Receiver estimates channel quality from a received data burst
– Receiver informs Transmitter of desired modulation
– Transmitter selects modulation for data burst
– Modulations are High, Med, and Low
• Waveform families and HPW Baud Rates
– UFO: 56 kbps, 37 kbps, & 18 kbps (25 kHz 181B)
– WB: 42 kbps & 21 kbps (25 kHz 181A)
– NB: 8.5 kbps & 4.2 kbps (5 kHz)
– LOS: Best data rate up to 64 kbps (1600, 2666, 8000, 16 k, 21.3 k,
42.6 k, and 64 k)
HPW Waveform Adaptation
• HPW operation has six primary steps to configure.
1. Load Traffic Encryption Key (TEK)
2. Load Transmission Security Key (TSK)
3. Synchronize radio HPW Time-of-Day (TOD)
4. Set the radio’s data port to Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) to use
12043-0710-A006 cable or use the 12043-2750-A006 USB
programming cable.
5. Select the HPW mode based on the satellite type and
communication conditions.
6. Configure the remaining HPW options.
