Overview

The HART HLED01 40V Edger is a cordless, battery-operated gardening tool designed for edging along sidewalks, driveways, flower beds, and similar areas. It is not intended for use on or near graveled surfaces or for any other purpose.

Function Description:

The edger's primary function is to create clean, defined edges for lawns and garden beds. It operates with a rotating blade that cuts into the ground, guided by a series of adjustable features to ensure consistent depth and protection for surrounding surfaces. The tool is powered by a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack, which must be securely installed before operation. Safety features like a lock-out button prevent accidental starting, and a guard sweep helps clear debris from the blade area during use.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor: 40 Volts DC
  • Blade Length: 8.5 inches (215.9 mm)
  • Edging Depth: Adjustable from 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) to 2 inches (50.8 mm)

Usage Features:

  • Depth Adjustment Knob: This knob allows the user to control the depth of cut, with four notched positions ranging from 1/2 inch to 2 inches. A shallow cut is recommended for testing the cutting depth, which should then be progressively adjusted.
  • Drop Wheel Lever: One of the rear wheels is adjustable to four different positions, enabling the edger to maintain a consistent cutting depth on uneven surfaces, such as curbs. For level surfaces, the lever should be left in the fully raised position.
  • Edge Guide Lever: This lever controls the depth of the edge guard, which protects curbing and other surfaces from damage by the edger's blade. It can be raised or lowered and locked into place by aligning it with tabs on the blade guard.
  • Guard Sweep: A built-in guard sweep helps remove clippings and debris from the blade area, preventing clogging and ensuring an even edge.
  • Lock-Out Button: This safety feature prevents accidental starting of the edger. To start the tool, the lock-out button must be depressed simultaneously with the switch trigger.
  • Adjustable Handle Height: The angle of the front handle can be adjusted to four settings for comfortable operation. This also allows the edger to be stored vertically when the handle is set flat.
  • Battery System: The edger uses lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. It is essential to use only batteries and chargers listed in the product's correlation supplement. The battery pack is installed by raising the battery cover, inserting the pack until it latches securely, and then closing the cover. To remove, the cover is raised, the latch is depressed, and the pack is removed.
  • Operating Position: The edger should be held with both hands on the handle assembly and front handle, maintaining a firm grip. The handle assembly should be at approximately hip height for a comfortable position. The sight on the blade guide helps align the blade with the desired edging area.
  • Pacing: Edging should be done at a steady pace. If the blade bogs down, it indicates that the user is edging too fast and should slow down. The blade should not be forced into the ground.
  • Dry Conditions: Best results are achieved when the grass is dry. Edging in wet soil or wet grass can cause the blade guard to clog, leading to an uneven edge. If clogging occurs, the edger should be stopped, the battery removed, and debris cleared using the guard sweep.

Maintenance Features:

  • Blade Replacement: The blade should be replaced when it appears worn or when the edger's performance diminishes. Always wear gloves when handling the blade. The process involves removing the battery pack and hitch pin, rotating the blade until it locks, loosening the blade nut with the included blade wrench, removing the old blade and cupped washer, cleaning the area, centering the new blade, reinstalling the washer and blade nut, and finally torquing the blade nut to 5-7.25 ft. lbs. (6.78-9.83 Nm) clockwise. The replacement blade part number is HAC1EDG.
  • General Cleaning: Avoid using solvents on plastic parts, as they can cause damage. Clean the edger with clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, and grease after each use. Ensure air vents are kept clean and free of debris to prevent motor overheating.
  • Fastener Inspection: Periodically inspect the entire product for damaged, missing, or loose parts such as screws, nuts, bolts, and caps. All fasteners and caps should be securely tightened. The product should not be operated if any parts are missing or damaged until they are replaced.
  • Storage: Before storing, remove the battery pack. Clean all foreign material from the edger, including debris around the blade using the guard sweep. Store the edger indoors in a dry, locked place, inaccessible to children, and away from corrosive agents like garden chemicals and de-icing salts. The keyhole hanger at the back of the handle can be used for vertical storage.
  • Servicing: When servicing, only identical HART replacement parts should be used. Any other parts may create a hazard or cause product damage. For replacement parts or assistance, contact customer service at 1-800-776-5191. Do not attempt to modify the product or create accessories not recommended by the manufacturer.
