Overview

The HCP TC-038D is a temperature controller designed for use with crystal ovens, specifically the OV30D and OV50D models, manufactured by HC Photonics Corp. This device facilitates precise temperature control for various applications, offering both manual and software-based operation.

Function Description

The TC-038D acts as a PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) temperature controller, enabling users to set and maintain a desired temperature for a connected crystal oven. It features auto-tuning and programmable capabilities, allowing for automated and customized temperature profiles. The controller displays both the measured temperature (PV) and the target set temperature (SV) on its front panel. Users can adjust the set temperature, monitor the system status, and view a real-time temperature graph through a dedicated PC utility.

Usage Features

Front Panel Operation: The TC-038D features a front panel with a display and several keys for direct control:

  • PV Display (A): Shows the measured temperature or function codes.
  • SV Display (B): Shows the target set temperature or function values.
  • Data Change Keys (C, D): Increase or decrease values on the SV display. Holding down the key increases the speed of change.
  • Shift Key (E): Shifts digits on the SV display to the left.
  • Mode Key (F): Changes the displayed function on PV.
  • Level Key (G): Changes operational levels (Initial setting, operation, adjustment).
    • Setting -> Operation: Hold for >1s.
    • Operation -> Setting: Hold for >3s.
    • Operation <-> Adjustment: Press for <1s.

System Setup:

  1. Connect the power supply to the rear port (D) of the controller.
  2. Connect the crystal oven to the rear port (A) of the controller.
  3. Turn on the power switch (B) on the rear panel.
  4. Set the target temperature using the front panel keys (C/D).
  5. Wait for the temperature to stabilize.

Parameters Setting: While parameters are factory-set and not recommended for change, the manual provides descriptions for important settings:

  • IN-E (Sensor input type): Sets the sensor type (value 1 for PT100, -199~500°C range).
  • SL-H (Set point upper limit): Sets the upper bound for the current operation.
  • SL-L (Set point lower limit): Sets the lower bound for the current operation.
  • CMWE (Communications): Enables/disables communication.
  • AL (PID auto tuning): Executes PID auto-tuning.

Software Operation (PC Utility): The TC-038D PC Utility provides a graphical interface for control and monitoring:

  • Installation: Requires installing drivers (CP210x_Universal_Windows_Driver for Win10 or CP210x_VCP_Windows for XP/Win7) and then the TC-038D PC Utility itself via a setup.exe file.

    • Save Graph Button (g): Exports graph data to Excel.
    • Clear Graph Button (h): Clears the graph data.
    • End Button (i): Exits the software.
  • Temperature Control: Adjust the set point in the SV textbox (via keyboard or up/down arrows) and press "SV SET."
  • PV Reading Period: Adjust the "Time Period" textbox to set the data logging interval.
  • Data Management: Save graph data to Excel or clear the graph.

Crystal Oven Setup Procedure:

  1. Open the Teflon cover of the chip holder.
  2. Slightly loosen the screw and move the white Teflon to the left.
  3. Carefully place the crystal into the holder using a clip, ensuring no surface scratches or damage.
  4. Push the white Teflon to the right until the crystal is clamped.
  5. Tighten the screw.
  6. Replace the cover after alignment, as operating without it affects temperature uniformity.

Maintenance Features

Error Message Analysis: The controller provides error messages for quick troubleshooting:

  • S.ERR (Sensor input error): Indicates temperature sensing error, out of range, incorrect oven connection, or wrong sensor type setting.
  • E333 (AD converter Error): Suggests an internal circuit error. If power cycling doesn't resolve it, the unit needs further investigation.
  • E111 (Memory error): Indicates an internal circuit error. If power cycling doesn't resolve it, the unit needs further investigation.

Safety and Warranty:

  • General Warnings: Users are advised to heed all warnings, avoid using the equipment near water, ensure proper grounding, protect power cords, disconnect power before cleaning, and lockout electrical power sources before servicing.
  • Warranty: HCP provides a 1-year warranty for the TC-038D from the date of shipment. For repair service, customers must contact HCP. Shipping costs to HCP are borne by the customer, while repair and return shipping costs are covered by HCP if the failure occurs under proper use.
