B9 Lighting intensity test
Purpose of the test:
This test is performed to check the lighting intensity at
the workplace as an aid in minimizing cabinet operator
fatigue.
Testing appartus:
Light meter in accordance with the requirements of
the IES (Illuminating Engineering Society).
Calibration of the apparatus:
The light meter must be calibrated by the manufac-
turer.
Test area at the work surface:
Test line in the center of the work surface parallel to
the front window. Beginning with a distance A of 15
cm (6 in) to the sidewalls, measure the lighting inten-
sity at 30 cm (12 in) intervals.
Test conditions:
Standard lighting of location.
Perform the test measurement:
1. Turn on the lighting of the safety cabinet. The
lead- time for the measurement is at least ten
minutes.
2. Install the measuring device.
3. Turn on the blower.
4. Fig. B11: Perform the measurements at the test
points and record the values.
5. Repeat the measurements with the cabinet lights
off.
Acceptance according to NSF, 49, Annex F:
With a background lighting (lighting at the location) of
220-430 lx, the lighting intensity at the work surface
must be between 860 and 1600 lx. Individual values
must not be below 650 lx.
Troubleshooting:
Lighting intensity too low:
Check the florescent tubes and replace the tubes,
if required.
