■ If the engine starts, runs, and accelerates but will
notidle,turntheidlingspeedscrew“T”clockwiseto
increaseidlingspeed.

“T” anticlockwise to reduce the idle RPM and stop
thechain movement. Ifthe sawchain stillmoves at
idling speed, contact a Homelite service dealer for
adjustment and discontinue use until the repair is
made.

OPERATING THE CHAIN BRAKE
See gure 25 - 26.
Refer to “Safety” earlier in this manual for additional
information. Check the operating condition of the chain
brakepriortoeachuse.
1. Starttheengineandgraspthefrontandrearhandles
securelywithbothhands.
2. Pullthethrottletriggertobringthechainsawuptofull
speed.Usingthebackofyourlefthand,engagethe
chainbrake(A)bypushingthechainbrakelever/hand
guardtowardthebarwhilethechainisrotatingrapidly.
NOTE:Thechainbrakeshouldengageandstopthe
chainimmediately.Ifnot,stopthesawbyplacingthe
ignitionswitchinthe“O”stopposition.Takethesawto
Homeliteservicedealerforrepairanddiscontinueuse
untiltherepairismade.
3. Resetthechainbrakebackintotherunposition(B)by
graspingtheright-handside(fromoperator’sposition)
ofthechainbrakelever/handguardandpulltowards
thefronthandleuntilyouhearaclick.
FELLING TREES – HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS
See gure 27.
WARNING
Donotfelltreesduringperiodsofhighwindorheavy
precipitation. Wait until the hazardous weather has
ended.
When felling a tree, it is important that you heed the
followingwarningstopreventpossibleseriousinjury.
■ Wear eye, hearing, and head protection (A) when
operatingthisequipment.
■ Donotcutdowntreeshavinganextremeleanorlarge
treeswithrottenordeadlimbs,loosebark,orhollow
trunks.Havethesetreespushedordraggeddownwith
heavyequipment,thencutthemup.
■ Consider the distribution and weight of heavy limbs
(B).
■ Clearouttheundergrowtharoundthetreetobefelled
(C).
■ Donotcuttreesnearelectricalwiresorbuildings(D).
■ Considerthedirectioninwhichthetreeleans(E).
■ Checkthetreefordamagedordeadbrancheswhich
couldfallandhityouduringfelling(F).
■ Periodically glance at the top of the tree during the
back-cut to assure the tree is going to fall in the
desireddirection.
■ Keep allbystanders at a safedistance (G) (at least
twicetheheightofthetree).
■ Prepareapathofsaferetreat(H).
■ Ifthetreestartstofallinthewrongdirection,orifthe
sawgetscaughtorhungupduringthefall,leavethe
sawandsaveyourself!
■ Considerthewinddirectionbeforefellingatree.
■ Do not fell trees near power lines or near buildings
whichcouldbestruckbyfallinglimbsorthetreeitself.
■ Thechainsawoperatorshouldkeepontheuphillside
oftheterrainasthetreeislikelytorollorslidedownhill
afteritisfelled.
■ Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, staples, and
wirefromthetreewherefellingcutsaretobemade.
WARNING
Do not fell trees near power lines or near buildings
whichcouldbestruckbyfallinglimbsorthetreeitself.
PROPER PROCEDURE FOR TREE FELLING
See gure 28 - 31.
1. Pickyourescaperoute(orroutesincasetheintended
routeisblocked).Cleartheimmediateareaaroundthe
treeandmakesuretherearenoobstructionsinyour
plannedpathofretreat.Clearthepathofsaferetreat
approximately135°fromtheplannedlineoffall(A).
2. Considertheforceanddirectionofthewind,thelean
andbalanceofthetree,andthelocationoflargelimbs.
Thesethingsinuencethedirectioninwhichthetree
willfall.Donottrytofellatreealongalinedifferent
fromitsnaturallineoffall(B).
