Overview

This document is a user manual for the Honeywell Programmable Digital Lock Waterproof Fire Chest, Model 1553. It provides comprehensive instructions for setup, operation, and maintenance, along with warranty and consumer assistance information.

Function Description:

The Honeywell Programmable Digital Lock Waterproof Fire Chest is designed to protect paper documents and media from damage caused by heat and moisture exposure during fire and water incidents. It features a programmable digital lock for secure access and a waterproof seal to prevent water ingress. The chest is built to high manufacturing standards to ensure maximum user satisfaction and provide "Peace of Mind" for many years.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: 1553
  • Lock Type: Programmable Digital Lock with a privacy lock and emergency override key.
  • Power Source: Uses 4 AAA batteries for the digital lock.
  • Fire Protection:
    • Independent testing verifies the interior temperature remains below 350°F (177°C) for thirty minutes when the outside temperature is up to 1550°F (843°C).
    • A Lifetime After-Fire Replacement Guarantee is offered, providing a free replacement unit if the product is damaged by fire while still owned by the original purchaser.
  • Water Protection:
    • Independent testing verifies the interior remains dry when completely submerged for up to 80 hours (1 meter depth of water).
    • The waterproof seal requires airing out for at least 30 minutes before initial use to decompress and perform as intended.
  • Storage Recommendations: Must always be stored flat with the lid on top and closed. Never store the chest on any of its sides or upside-down to ensure specified performance.
  • Digital Lock Features:
    • Factory default passcode: 1-2-3-4-1-2.
    • Supports a new user 6-digit passcode.
    • LED indicator light for status (Red for incorrect entry/passcode setting, Green for correct entry/passcode changed, Orange for low battery).
    • Incorrect entry lockdown: After 3 incorrect entries, the chest locks down for 4 minutes, during which all entries are invalid. The emergency override key can still be used during this time.
    • Passcode entry timing: Each consecutive digit entry must be within 10 seconds. If the interval exceeds 10 seconds, previous digit entries become invalid.

Usage Features:

  • Initial Setup:
    1. Insert the key into the lock cylinder and turn it counterclockwise 1/4 turn to unlock.
    2. With the key lock in the unlocked position, turn the knob to the right to the unlocked position.
    3. While holding the knob in the unlocked position, lift the lid to open. The knob will return to the locked position when released.
    4. Slide open the battery compartment cover, install 4 AAA batteries in the correct orientation over the ribbon, and replace the cover. The LED will flash Green and Red 3 times.
  • Unlocking with Digital Lock:
    1. Enter the default passcode (1-2-3-4-1-2) or your custom 6-digit passcode. The LED will flash red once with each digit entry.
    2. If the correct passcode is entered within 10 seconds per digit, the LED will light up green for 5 seconds.
    3. Turn the knob to the right to unlatch the safe and lift the lid to open.
  • Setting/Resetting Passcode:
    1. Open the lid, remove the reset button cover, and press the reset button on the underside of the lock. The LED will flash Red.
    2. Enter the new 6-digit passcode and press the reset button again.
    3. The LED will flash Green, then re-enter the 6-digit passcode.
    4. If the passcodes match and are 6 digits long, the LED will light up green for 2 seconds, indicating a successful change. If not, the LED will light up red for 2 seconds, and the passcode will revert to the previous one.
  • Unlocking and Opening with Key (Emergency Override):
    1. Insert the key into the lock cylinder.
    2. Turn the key counterclockwise to the left 1/4 turn.
    3. With the key lock in the unlocked position, turn the knob to the right to the unlatched position.
    4. Hold the knob in the unlatched position and lift the lid to open.
  • Closing and Locking the Chest:
    1. Carefully lower the lid into the closed position and push it downwards to ensure it is properly latched.
    2. Turn the key clockwise to the right 1/4 turn to lock.
    3. Remove the key.
  • Low Battery Indicator: When entering the passcode, the LED flashes orange to indicate low power, signaling that batteries need replacement.
  • Prohibited Storage: This chest is not intended for the storage of medications, firearms, ammunition, or combustible items. Pearls should also not be stored as they may sustain damage at temperatures below 350°F.

Maintenance Features:

  • Interior Moisture Warning: For optimum performance, Waterproof Fire Chests should be opened and aired out for at least 30 minutes every week to prevent moisture buildup inside. This balances humidity and allows excess moisture to escape. Failure to do so regularly may result in a musty smell, especially on paperwork. The manufacturer is not responsible for damage or loss due to moisture if proper care and preventative maintenance are not followed.
  • Key Identification: Key identification numbers (3-4 digits) are etched on the metal collar in the keyhole and on the key itself, important for ordering additional keys.
  • Ordering Additional Keys: Requires proof of ownership (sales receipt and picture ID, or a Product Ownership Verification Form), contact information, product details (Chest Model #, Lock Key #, Quantity), and method of payment. Contact Consumer Assistance for pricing and to place an order.
  • Consumer Assistance: Contact information for email, website, and telephone support (US/Canada, Mexico, Australia, Germany/New Zealand, and other countries) is provided. Call center and call-back hours are specified, based on PST (Los Angeles, CA, USA).
  • Chest Identification Record: A section is provided to record the Model Number and Key/Lock Number for future reference. This manual should never be stored inside the chest.
