Overview

The Honeywell EMM-3 Electronic MiniZone™ Panel is a control device designed for single-stage heat/cool equipment in two- and three-zone applications. It facilitates zoned control of HVAC systems, allowing individual temperature management in different areas of a building.

Function Description:

The EMM-3 panel acts as the central control unit for a zoned HVAC system. It interfaces with four-wire thermostats in each zone, dampers, and the main HVAC equipment (furnace/boiler, cooling contactor, fan relay). The panel manages calls for heating and cooling from individual zones, opening and closing dampers as needed to direct conditioned air. It supports automatic zone changeover with a 20-minute timer, ensuring efficient transitions between heating and cooling demands. Individual zone fan control is also a key feature. The panel incorporates a purge timer to protect equipment between heating and cooling calls, allowing heat exchangers to dissipate conditioned air into the zone. It is compatible with both single and dual transformer equipment.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Input Ratings:
    • Discharge Air Temperature Sensor (DATS): 24000 to 1600 ohms.
  • Output Ratings:
    • Equipment Relays and Zone Relays: 1.5A run, 3.5A inrush, 200,000 cycles (30 Vac); 1.5A run, 7.5A inrush, 100,000 cycles (30 Vac).
  • Humidity Ratings: 5% to 90% RH non-condensing.
  • Temperature Ratings:
    • Shipping: -20° to 120°F (-29° to 49°C).
    • Operating: -40° to 150°F (-40° to 66°C).
  • Wiring: 18 gauge wire for all equipment and system connections.
  • Wiring Connections:
    • Thermostat: R-C-W-Y-G.
    • Dampers: M6 (Closed); M4 (Open); M1 (Common).
    • Discharge Air Temperature Sensor: ZMS-ZMS.
    • Transformer: R-C.
    • Equipment: RC-RH-Y-W-G.
  • Dimensions: 10-3/4 in. (273 mm) height x 12-3/4 in. (273 mm) width x 1-7/8 in. (47 mm) depth.
  • Approvals: Federal Communications Commission: Class B.
  • Thermostats: Compatible with any Honeywell four-wire thermostat.
  • Recommended Accessories:
    • 40 VA transformer (AT140D1046).
    • Capacity protector (DATS C7735A1000).
    • Various round and rectangular static pressure regulator dampers (e.g., 7 SPRD for 300 cfm, 12x8 SPRD for 1000 cfm).
  • Dampers: Supports power-open/power-closed, spring-open/power-closed, and spring-closed/power-open dampers.

Usage Features:

The EMM-3 panel provides clear visual feedback on system and zone status through LED indicators:

  • SYSTEM LED:
    • Red: Heat mode.
    • Green: Cool mode.
    • Orange: Purge mode.
    • Flashing Red: System exceeds high DATS input.
    • Flashing Green: System exceeds low DATS input.
    • Flashing Orange: No DATS or DATS failure.
    • Off: Idle mode or Fan mode.
  • ZONE LED (3):
    • Green: Dampers are opening or open.
    • No Color: Dampers are closing or closed. An optional C7735 Discharge Air Temperature Sensor can be integrated for capacity control, preventing equipment damage from excessively high or low discharge air temperatures. The panel uses a thermal circuit breaker to protect itself and the transformer from damage due to miswiring. The purge timer ensures equipment protection by allowing a brief delay between calls for heating and cooling, preventing rapid cycling and ensuring proper air distribution. The panel supports various damper types, including spring-open/power-closed, spring-closed/power-open, and power-open/power-closed, offering flexibility in system design.

Maintenance Features:

The EMM-3 panel includes diagnostic tools to aid in troubleshooting:

  • BOOT Button: Used to clear the system and microprocessor, useful for resetting the panel during troubleshooting.
  • PURGE OVERRIDE Button: Allows bypassing the purge cycle, which can expedite troubleshooting by immediately initiating a call for conditioning.
  • LED Status Indicators: The SYSTEM and ZONE damper status LEDs provide immediate visual cues about the system's operational state and any potential issues, such as DATS errors or damper malfunctions.
  • Purge Timing: Fixed at 2.5 minutes, not field-adjustable. Fan operation is always on during purge mode.
  • DATS Operation: High limit is 160°F (71°C), low limit is 44°F (6°C), not field-adjustable. Troubleshooting flowcharts are provided in the manual to guide users through common issues, such as the thermostat calling for cooling but the system light not turning green, or the thermostat calling for heating but the system light not turning red. These flowcharts help identify problems related to wiring, transformer, thermostats, dampers, and the DATS sensor. The panel's design allows for step-by-step isolation of potential faults, such as checking voltage at various terminals and systematically reattaching components to identify the source of a thermal fuse trip.
