Overview

The Honeywell TG586A Locking Cover is designed to protect Chronotherm® III Thermostats from tampering and damage. This locking cover replaces the existing thermostat cover without requiring removal or adjustment of the thermostat itself, ensuring a seamless installation process.

Function Description

The primary function of the TG586A Locking Cover is to secure and protect compatible Honeywell Chronotherm® III Microelectronic Thermostats, specifically models T8600, T8601, T8602, T8603, T8611, and T8621. By enclosing the thermostat, it prevents unauthorized access to programming keys and temperature settings, thereby maintaining desired climate control parameters and preventing accidental or intentional alterations.

The locking cover offers flexibility in display options, allowing users to choose how much of the thermostat's interface is visible and accessible. It can completely cover the time and temperature display along with all programming keys, providing maximum security. Alternatively, it can be configured to show the visible time and temperature display while still covering the programming keys, or to display the time and temperature with access to only the "PRESENT SETTING," "WARMER," and "COOLER" keys for basic temperature adjustments. This adaptability ensures that the level of access can be tailored to specific needs, balancing security with convenience.

Additionally, the TG586A Locking Cover is designed to accommodate thermostat models that include LEDs (light-emitting diodes) on their subbases, ensuring that these indicators remain visible even when the cover is installed. It's important to note that once the locking cover is secured, the system switches on the thermostat cannot be changed, reinforcing its protective function.

Usage Features

Installation of the TG586A Locking Cover involves a few straightforward steps. First, the existing thermostat cover must be removed. This is done by pulling the cover outward, swinging it down to a right angle, and then pulling it away from the thermostat until it snaps free. The corner screws on the thermostat should be tightened to ensure it is securely attached to its base before installing the new cover.

The TG586A Locking Cover is installed by hanging its upper hinged edge onto the thermostat and then swinging it down until it engages. The locking mechanism automatically secures the cover without the need for a key during installation.

The cover's versatility in display options is achieved through the use of a locking cover insert.

  • For complete coverage: To cover both the time and temperature display and all programming keys, both the locking cover and the full locking cover insert are used. The insert fits behind the locking cover, and the two pieces are pressed together until they fit into place.
  • For visible display with limited access: To display the time and temperature while covering programming keys but allowing access to the "PRESENT SETTING," "WARMER," and "COOLER" keys, the locking cover insert needs to be modified. The insert has a notch where it can be broken into two pieces. The smaller piece of the insert is then fitted behind the open space on the locking cover that corresponds to these specific keys, and the pieces are pressed together. The larger, unused portion of the insert is discarded. It is crucial to note that if this option (visible time and temperature display without access to programming keys) is chosen, the time and temperature display cannot be covered later.
  • For visible display with full access to basic controls: To have the time and temperature display visible with access to the "WARMER" and "COOLER" keys, only the locking cover is used, without any insert. This configuration allows for basic temperature adjustments directly from the thermostat interface.

When the locking cover insert is removed, users can adjust the temperature by pressing the "PRESENT SETTING" key to determine if the active mode is Heat or Cool. If in Heat mode, pressing "WARMER" increases the temperature, and "COOLER" decreases it. Similarly, if in Cool mode, "WARMER" increases the temperature (making it warmer), and "COOLER" decreases it (making it cooler). For Auto Changeover Chronotherm® III models, the mode might need to be changed by pressing the "PRESENT SETTING" key again after determining the current mode.

To remove the TG586A Locking Cover, the provided key is inserted and rotated clockwise until the locking mechanism disengages from the thermostat. The cover can then be swung outward and lifted off.

Maintenance Features

The TG586A Locking Cover is designed for durability and minimal maintenance. As a protective accessory, its primary "maintenance" involves ensuring it remains securely locked to prevent tampering. The robust construction is intended to withstand regular use in various environments.

Cleaning the cover would typically involve wiping it with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust or smudges, similar to how one would clean other plastic household items. Abrasive cleaners or solvents should be avoided to prevent damage to the plastic material or any printed labels.

The locking mechanism is designed for reliable operation. If the key becomes difficult to turn, a small amount of graphite lubricant (not oil-based lubricants, which can attract dust) might be applied to the keyhole, though this is rarely necessary for a well-maintained lock.

The compatibility warning is a key aspect of maintenance: the TG586A is specifically designed for the listed Chronotherm® III models. Using it with other thermostat models could damage both the cover and the unsupported thermostat, highlighting the importance of adhering to the compatibility guidelines provided in the manual. This ensures the longevity and proper functioning of both the locking cover and the thermostat it protects.

Overall, the TG586A Locking Cover is a practical and effective solution for safeguarding Chronotherm® III Thermostats, offering flexible display options and straightforward installation and removal procedures. Its design emphasizes protection and ease of use, making it a valuable addition for environments where thermostat settings need to be controlled and secured.
